Post to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Evernote from Snagit!

Posted on Tuesday March 6, 2012

Snagit has been pretty cozy with a lot of different sharing destinations...last week we added four new, often-requested outputs. Once you install them, you'll see buttons inside Snagit to upload images and videos directly to Evernote, Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube!

All of us at TechSmith are super excited to have these new sharing options in our Snagit toolbar and hope you will be, too.

The YouTube output is installed automagically when you upgrade to Snagit 11 or 2. The buttons for Facebook, Twitter, and Evernote must be installed manually. But some of them work on older versions of Snagit, in case you haven't gotten around to upgrading to the latest and greatest. ;)

On Windows, you can use the outputs in Snagit 9, 10, or 11 (video sharing is limited to version 11). On Mac, you can use the Evernote output with version 1 but will need version 2 for the others.

Installing the Outputs

To install, just click the links below. A dialog will appear; choose to run or open the file with Snagit. Then you will see the buttons appear among your share options inside Snagit.

Win output Mac output
Win output Mac output
Win output Mac output

For Snagit on Windows, we also provide capture profiles for a streamlined capture-share workflow. You will still need to install the output but then you can add the capture profile. Outputs, profiles, and more goodies are found on the Snagit accessories page.

Using the Outputs

I won't give a complete, step-by-step walkthrough of each output here, but the gist is...

Once you've captured content, click the button for the share destination you have in mind. The first time you use a button, you'll need to log in and authorize Snagit to post on your behalf.

Each time you use the Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube button, you're prompted to add a description, message, or other necessaries. YouTube gives you an option to make the video public, private, or unlisted.

Proceed through the steps and voila! the content is posted to your social channel or notebook!

If you run into any issues with the outputs, our support team can help you get it fixed.

And while you're sharing, be sure to share your best stuff with us...Snagit is on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, too!

UPDATE: the recorded episode is embedded below and posted on YouTube.

Today is the day! Tune in at 2pm EST on this blog post and watch The Forge live! This month's show is dedicated to all things Snagit. Snagit turns 20 years old this year!

Were you wondering what Snagit looked like way back in 1991? The screenshot below shows Snagit's user interface from version 1.6, the first version of Snagit that was publicly released (Earlier versions were strictly internal to TechSmith). It looked a little different than it does today. :-)

A Snagit Milestone - Join us for The Forge, November 10 at 2pm EST

Posted on Monday November 7, 2011

snagit_20.png

Think back to 1991. Remember where you were? What were you doing? What did your hair look like (I was rocking some fantastic 90's hair! Hot rollers and hair spray, baby!)?

Remember what tech was like back in 1991? 6 pound 'laptops'. Apple introduced the PowerBook laptop. Remember Compuserve and BBS? Microsoft Releases MS Dos 5.0 and Windows 3.1. You could also run OS/2 and the first version of Linux was released. A 486 PC computer was selling for over $7,000! Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect, Harvard Graphics were popular pieces of software. Nintendo released the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. And, Tim Berners-Lee from CERN turned on the Web!

And, something else happened... Snagit was released in 1991. Yes, Snagit! Snagit turns 20 years old this year! Can you believe that? Snagit has been built on your feedback. And, thanks to your support, Snagit is still going strong after 20 years. You can see Snagit's history here

Please join us in celebrating the first 20 years of Snagit live on The Forge this Thursday at 2pm EST. Tune in on the Visual Lounge Blog here. You might have to refresh the page.

Need a reminder? Download a calendar invite for Outlook here (.msg). We'd love for you to watch live and join us in the chat room. We'd be happy to answer your questions and comments. Can't join us live? We'll record it and post for everyone to watch shortly after the show wraps up.

Looking for more tech history in 1991? Zdnet has a great article about the world of Tech in 1991 here.

What will you do to celebrate?

High Tech Halloween Pumpkin Carving

Posted on Saturday October 29, 2011

pumpkin techsmith.jpg

Fall is my favorite time of year. I love pumpkins! We always have fun at TechSmith for Halloween. TechSmithies get dressed up, we carve pumpkins and people bring their children in for a Halloween parade and trick-or-treating. And this year is no different... except I'm overseas for BarCamp London 9. So, I missed out on the festivities at home (but I'm very happy to be in London).

I was walking around London yesterday trying to fight jetlag. I saw quite a few pumpkins and fall decorations out and that got me thinking about pumpkin carving. A few years ago, I carved a pumpkin with the Visual Lounge blog logo.

Being a nerd, I used Snagit to help with my stencil! I thought I'd share with you how I created my stencil. Take your pumpkin carving design to the next level with some high tech help from Snagit.

Here are the steps I took to create my stencil:

  • Capture logo or image with Snagit
  • On the PC: Open screenshot in Snagit's Editor, click the Image tab > Canvas group > Resize tool > Resize Image option
  • On the Mac: After capturing your image, select from Snagit's menu Edit > Resize.
  • Print your screenshot
  • Tape your screenshot to your pumpkin and carve away!
  • You can see some pics from past TechSmith Halloween celebrations here or check out the slideshow below. I'll have to get some pics from this year to share with you. Good luck with your pumpkin carving! I'd love to see what you create! Share some links with me!

We Need Your Stamp and Callout Requests...

Posted on Wednesday October 12, 2011

snagit stamp request.jpg

Bacon, soccer balls, and mustaches. What do they have in common? They're all graphics we've used for stamps in Snagit!

I need your help. We want to know what new stamps and callouts you'd like to see for Snagit and Camtasia? Do you need travel stamps? Stamps for architecture or mapping? Arrow callouts? Or, maybe you need something like unicorns and glitter? Who doesn't need those? :-)

To get an idea of current stamps and callouts we're offering, see the Snagit stamps here (see 'Stamps' section) and the Camtasia ones here.

Please chime in and share your requests! We'd really appreciate any ideas and feedback you have.

SXSW and the Rockstache

Posted on Sunday March 13, 2011

"A man without a mustache is like a cup of tea without sugar" ~ English Proverb

rockstache.png

The TechSmith crew has descended on Austin, Texas this week for South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW). SXSW is like spring break for geeks or geek family reunion!

TechSmithies are attending sessions, meeting up with users and we have a booth on the tradeshow floor (booth 340). If you're attending the conferece, I'd love to meet-up - drop me a line (517.410.0030 or email.)!

We'll have some fun swag for our booth visitors... Fake mustaches! Who doesn't need a fake mustache? If you're at the show, stop by, pick one up, take your pic around town, and post it! Use the hashtag #rockstache so we can find them. That's the Michigan State Alumni Association (MSUAA) (my alma mater!) in the photo rocking out the rockstaches last night! MSUAA has great coverage of SXSW here.

We also have some fun free digital swag for our Snagit users. We have some Rockstache Mustache Snagit Stamps! You can view what they look like here.

Ready to add some mustaches to your Snagit captures?

  • First, download the zip file here. Then unzip the file. If you're on a PC, here's how. On a Mac, just double click the zip file.
  • After you've downloaded and unzipped the file, for Snagit on the PC, here is a tutorial on how to install and use stamps (see in the video around the 2:15 marker).
  • For Snagit for the Mac, you can unzip the file and drag the png mustache file to Snagit's tray and then combine it with your screencapture to use. Here's a quick Jing showing you how.

I am posting pics from SXSW here. I can't wait to see what you create with your Snagit mustache stamps! Be sure to tag your screencaps with #rockstache so we can find them.

Give Thanks with some Snagit Stamps

Posted on Tuesday November 23, 2010

In the United States, we're getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It's not about the gifts. It's about getting together with friends and family over a meal and giving thanks. Sometimes we even watch a little football. Simple as that.

Peter, the Snagit Guide from SoftwareCasa, has created some free Snagit stamps to celebrate Thanksgiving.

You can see all the stamps in the image below. You can find out more information about the stamps and download them here.

And, I wanted to thank you for reading the Visual Lounge blog, for all your comments, advice and emails and for being part of our TechSmith community! I appreciate it and TechSmith does too!

You can watch a tutorial to see how to make your own stamps or add them in Snagit here. And, you can find some free stamps TechSmith made here.

What kinds of stamps would you like made for Snagit? My vote? Mustaches and unicorn horns (yes, it's true!).

Pumpkin Carving for Geeks with Snagit...

Posted on Friday October 29, 2010

jing pumpkin.png

Carving pumpkins is serious business at TechSmith! This week we had a pumpkin carving contest at the office. And, since we're geeks, we had some pumpkins carved with a technology theme. Check out the winning pumpkin - yes, that's the Jing user interface!

Snagit can be your competitive advantage in the office and also outside of business hours for something like a pumpkin carving contest. Capture a logo or image you would like to use for your pumpkin with Snagit. Then use Snagit to scale the image to make a custom stencil for your pumpkin. Print off the capture, tape it to your pumpkin and start carving!

In Snagit 10, here's how you can resize your captured image to fit your pumpkin perfectly:

  1. Click Image tab > Canvas group > Resize tool > Resize Image option
  2. The Resize Image task page appears. Make selections and click Close. (note: You must flatten all vector-based to resize the entire canvas. If there are vector objects on the canvas, you are prompted to flatten objects and continue).

  3. Enter a new width and height.
  • Select Smooth Scaling to give the capture or image edges a "smooth" appearance. The Smooth Scaling option also improves the readability of the scaled down capture.
  • If necessary, change color of canvas when making the canvas larger than the capture.
  • Keep aspect ratio maintains the correct proportion when changing the width or height.

Check out some pics here from Greg Smith, our Logistics Specialist, of all the pumpkins. And, I have some pics from the 2005 pumpkin carving contest at TechSmith here. Yes, I even used Snagit back then to make a Visual Lounge pumpkin.

Activities like this make TechSmith a truly fun place to work! Are you using Snagit for anything crafty or creative?

What's New and Shiny? Meet Snagit 10!

Posted on Monday May 10, 2010

snagit10.png There's a new kid on the block! No, I'm not talking about the boy band from the 80's. I'm talking about a new release of Snagit!

The Snagit team has been hard at work listening to your feedback and working on Snagit. And, I'm happy to announce that Snagit 10 is available today! I hope you'll try it out!

What's new in Snagit 10? Lots of new features and functionality including:

  • All-in-One Capture - This is my favorite feature and saves me a lot of time! With Snagit 10, you can select a full screen, region, window or auto-scrolling (vertical and horizontal) area during the capture process with a single hot key or mouse click. Snagit 10 gives you an enhanced magnifier window and cross-hairs to give you exact, down-to-the-pixel precision when performing a region capture. Want to see it in action? Here's a screencast (runs 1:11 minutes). Or, prefer a written tutorial? You can learn about the All-in-One Capture here.

snagit10-2.png

  • Transparency - Have you ever tried snagging an image that has rounded corners or has an irregularly shaped edge? In the past, you'd get a white box around the whole image and extra parts of your background showing. With Snagit 10, you can remove the solid white background to allow captured images to float seamlessly on web pages, complex presentation slides and color documents. Check out this screencast all about transparency here (54 seconds).
  • New text possibilities - Did you know you can capture and edit hard-to-grab text from websites and applications with Snagit? Not many people know about the Text Capture option in Snagit. We've updated the Text Capture feature so you can capture not only the text from a website but also its formatting. Edit text color, font style, size and more with easy-to-use Snagit editing tools. Rotate text boxes a full 360 degrees.
  • Direct output to Screencast.com - I often like to share what I capture to get feedback or input on my screen captures. With Snagit 10, there is a new Screencast.com direct output that makes it easy to share and store your screen captures. You can make your capture on Screencast.com public, private or password protected plus viewers can leave comments on your capture. You can see a screencast about this feature here (51 seconds).
  • New edge effects - Snagit 10 has some great new edge effects that give your captures a fresh, modern look like a page curl. We also added a new horizontal and vertical cut-out effects so you can remove unwanted sections of a web page or image. You can see a quick screencast of the cut-out effect in action here (40 seconds).
  • Auto-scroll enhancement - Snagit 10 now has a faster auto-scroll capture which includes a new notification window to signify when scrolling is in progress.
  • Editor Color Options - You asked and we listened. One of our popular requests was to have the option to change the color of the Snagit 10 editor background. Change it to blue or silver, or keep the default black.

As always, you can try out a full featured, 30 day trial copy of Snagit 10 by downloading it here. We also have lots of new free training and tutorials all about Snagit 10 which you can visit here.

I can't wait for you to try Snagit 10! Thanks to your feedback, we can keep improving Snagit. So, please keep the feedback coming! Feel free to leave a comment here on the blog or email us your feedback.

Snagit - Now with 100% More Bacon!

Posted on Thursday April 29, 2010

bacon_350x200.gif

I saw a t-shirt recently that said "Bacon Makes Everything Better". Do you think that's true? If so, Snagit is about to get better...

Ann Morgan, one of our talented graphic artists has been making some bacon graphics for different projects. Since you can take any PNG, JPG, GIF, TIF or BMP and turn it into a custom Snagit stamp, we can use Ann's bacon graphics as custom Snagit stamps! And, Ann made not one, but 32 24 different bacon stamps (note: I had to remove a few of the stamps that had the 'Snagit' logo written with bacon since I learned that they do not "meat" TechSmith's logo requirements.) ranging from bacon arrows to bacon boxes to bacon stars! You can download a file of all the bacon stamps here (.zip file). I can't wait to see what you create with these!

And, Chris McQueen in our training department also made some fun stamps - FTW (For The Win), Fail and Epic Fail in the style of the "Fail" internet meme. You can download a file with all three stamps in it here (.zip file).

Chris also made a a quick screencast to show you how to create and use a custom stamp in Snagit. The video runs just over 2 minutes.

If you prefer a written tutorial, you can visit here to see how to add a Custom Stamp to your Quick Styles Gallery in Snagit.

And, there are lots of other places you can find more Snagit stamps. You can download them here from TechSmith. Or, Geetesh Bajaj from Indezine and Scrapbook Presentations has hundreds of other free Snagit stamps available in a variety of categories here. And, the Snagit Guide (not a TechSmith site) is about to release some free Snagit stamps. You can vote on your favorite stamps and find out more info from the Snagit Guide here.

Hunting Rabbits in Indiana!

Posted on Sunday March 21, 2010

chevy tattoo.png

I think I've finally caught up on sleep after our Chevy SXSW Road Trip Challenge! As you may remember, the Snagit Product Manager, Tiffany Wood, Kyle Mulka, developer of Twilk, Kathy Jacobs, and I had to drive from Lansing, Michigan to Austin, Texas (and back) in a Chevy Traverse (made in Lansing, Michigan, our hometown!) to SXSW. Plus, we had to complete a variety of challenges from wrestling a diner cook to getting temporary tattoos of our teams hashtag (#lanchevysxsw - see pic at right).

One of the highlights of the trip had to be our first challenge in Noblesville, Indiana at Hare Chevrolet. Hare is the old transportation company in the United States! As part of our road trip challenge, we had to 'hunt (Hare Chevrolet) rabbits' which involved using OnStar technology and driving new Camaros (squeee!) and finding Chris Theisen, the Director of Digital Communications for Hare Chevrolet. You can read all about the challenge here.

Originally Chris and I met via 'Twitter' so it was nice to meet in person. It is great to see a car dealership using social media to listen and gather customer feedback plus help customers out. While visiting Hare Chevrolet, Chris shot a quick video about how Hare Chevrolet uses social media plus how he uses Snagit and Jing. The video runs less than 5 minutes.

Also, after driving close to 3,000 miles, I could not believe the kindness of strangers and friends. We got off the highway and were able to interact with local people. I learned that everyone has a story. Everyone was so friendly and willing to help us whether is was taking a goofy picture, being in a video or sharing their story. Thanks to all of you who helped us out, kept us awake, encouraged us and kept us laughing

You can see a log of our travels here, some pics here, and some videos here.

Where should we road trip to next?! I'm ready to hit the road again!

Time Saver Tuesday - Snag Project Files

Posted on Tuesday February 23, 2010

Have you ever created the perfect screencapture with Snagit - maybe you added text or other objects to your capture and then you saved it. And, if you're like me, then you decided to change something - maybe resize the text or remove an arrow. Well, no need to recreate that capture from scratch after you learn this Time Saver Tuesday trick! You'll be able to save time and create a file you can modify any time.

Meet the .SNAG file format. Save your screencapture as a .SNAG file and you can open it later to modify or edit the vector objects (Lines, Arrows, Shape, Highlight, Paintbrush, Stamp, Callouts and Text tools) any time.

The .SNAG file format is a Snagit Editor-only file. If you need to use your image outside of Snagit environment, like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint for example, you just save the final .snag file as the image format of your choice (like a .png or .jpg). When saving in these other file formats, the vector objects will be flattened and made a permanent part of the image.

To save your image as a Snagit Capture File:

  1. Click the Application button.
  2. Hover over Save As to expose the menu.
  3. Click Snagit Capture File.

What is your Time Saver Tip? Email me if you'd like to be a guest blogger and share your tips and tricks!

Time Saver Tuesday - Share and Share Alike

Posted on Tuesday February 16, 2010

timesave hand.pngThroughout the day I'm working in a variety of programs. I'm guessing you do the same. And, I'm often adding screenshots all over - I'm using them in my email, on Twitter, in a project plan in OneNote, as a title screen in a Camtasia Studio screencast and more...

You can save yourself some time and a few steps by using Snagit 'outputs'. With Snagit outputs, you send your captures directly from Snagit's Preview Window directly to the program or website of your choice with a single click. No need to save the capture and then find the saved image and import or paste into another program (that's way too many extra steps!).

You can download the Snagit outputs here. We have a Snagit output for: Screencast.com, Camtasia Studio, MindManager, Fog Creek FogBugz, Visual Studio Team System, Blogs (Movable Type, TypePad, WordPress.com and LiveJournal), Snagit Notes, Instant Messenger (Skype and AOL Instant Messenger), Flickr, and Microsoft Office (Word, OneNote, Excel and PowerPoint).

What other programs would you like to send your Snagit screen captures directly to? What would save you time?

Time Saver Tuesday - Snagit Print Driver + PDF

Posted on Tuesday January 19, 2010

Surfing Twitter today, reminded me of a little known feature in Snagit that can save you lots of time...

snagit pdf.png

Snagit has a 'printer' capture option. Snagit shows up as a 'printer' that you can choose when you go to print an image or document. This is useful for several reasons - you can use Snagit as a virtual printer. You don't need to print out your critical documents that you need to archive because the Printer Capture will capture and save your output as a graphical file. It saves it exactly as it would print so you now have an electronic version of your document - no need to print and file your document.

OK, how many of you have ever been sent a PDF that you're expected to print, fill out by hand and fax back? I often travel so I don't always have access to a printer or a fax machine. And, I'll be honest, I'm lazy - that's far too many steps. I use Snagit's Printer Capture to virtually print the document and use Snagit's text options to fill out the needed fields. I can even add a watermark to the doc if needed. Then, I can save the document as a PDF and just email and share the document with anyone.

Check out the tutorial and more reasons to use Snagit's Printer Capture option here.

And, as Hal Rottenberg notes on Twitter, '"@TechSmith":http://twitter.com/techsmith I hate hand-writing forms. I have bad handwriting, that may have something to do with it. :)'. I have the same issue - if I fill out the form by hand, people might have a hard time reading it. It's far easier and faster for me to type out the fields.

Time Saver Tuesday - Snagit Quick Styles

Posted on Tuesday January 12, 2010

I don't often set New Year resolutions, but this year I'm going to try to stick with one. And, that is to bring you a weekly Time Saver Tuesday tip. It might be a tip to show you a feature in one of our products that could save you time or a general tip about screencasting, presenting, audio or similar topics. And, I'd like your help. I'm looking for some volunteers to share their tips. If you're interested in sharing your Time Saver tips, please email me! So, lets get started...

I'm a creature of habit. For instance, every morning, I start my day by stumbling out of bed and heading to the coffee maker. I'm a better person with coffee! :-) And, the same is true in Snagit - I have favorite arrows, callouts and other special effects I like to use over and over again.

You can save time in Snagit and easily save the objects you routinely use in the Gallery. First, create the object you want to save, like an arrow, callout, shape, text box, pen object, or highlight color. Set the color, shadow, width, etc. of the object.

Note: For callouts and text boxes, the text itself is not saved - but the font properties are.

Right-click the object and choose Add to Quick Styles.

quick style 1.png

Then your object is added to the bottom of the Gallery and is ready to use.

quick styles 2.png

You can read more about Quick Styles here.

How do Snagit, Camtasia, Morae, Screencast.com or Jing save you time? Have any tips to share?

Rock Band Snags My Heart... Jeff Chausse Interview

Posted on Tuesday October 27, 2009

harmonix.png

Ever since my dad brought home an Atari 5200, I've been hooked on video games. I still love them to this day! Lately I've been addicted to Rock Band. And, sometimes, if there is no one around, I may even work up the nerve to play role of the lead singer in the game! I do a mean rendition of the Beastie Boys, "So Watcha Want". :-)

I recently 'met' Jeff Chausse (JC) on Twitter. Jeff has one of the coolest jobs around and is also a Snagit user! Jeff is the Web Director at Harmonix. And, Harmonix develops, you guessed it, Rock Band - Squeeeeeee! I had to know how Harmonix was using Snagit! Jeff was kind enough to answer some interview questions about how he uses Snagit. Enjoy!

BW: How have images and screenshots changed your own communication for the better?

JC: Obviously, it's cliché, but "a picture is worth a thousand words". If I need to tell my team that something on the web site needs to change, it's far easier for me to do a quick screen grab and add some explanatory text and arrows, than try to explain it in words.

BW: Are your images and screenshots used internally or externally? What is the viewer response to them?

JC: We use them both internally and externally. Again, within my team, they eliminate a whole lot of ambiguity when trying to describe a bug or how a feature should look. Externally, we often use screenshots when seeking approval from partners. When building a site, a whole lot of people need to approve the way certain things look, and their placement - the first parties (that is, the game platforms), our lawyers, business partners, and licensors. We sent countless screenshots to Apple Records folks in developing TheBeatlesRockBand.com.

BW: What do you use Snagit for primarily?

JC: Primarily, I use it to show things to my team - either "this is broken", "check out how this other site does this", or "here's how I think it should look. Snagit even has just enough editing features that I often use it to do quick and dirty mockups instead of firing up Photoshop. Sometimes, I'll get a confused email from a member of my team, 5 minutes before I have to run off to a meeting. The editing tools in Snagit let me VERY quickly clarify what I'm talking about.

BW: What are the last three captures in your Open Captures Tray?

JC: Let's see... I have a screenshot of an Outlook, showing someone on my team how he might have inadvertently scheduled a 0 minute meeting. I have a screenshot of a typo on our website that I sent to one of our writers to fix. And a screenshot of a ridiculous Windows error message. I thought of tweeting it, but never did.

BW: Is there one feature of Snagit that has flat-out delighted you? Tell me about it...

JC: I don't know if this is really considered a "feature", but I just love that I can see something on the screen, snag it (ha!), and send it off by email, all without ever having to save the file somewhere, give it name, drag it into an email as an attachment, and remember to delete the temporary file. Snagit really makes sending a mocked up image feel almost as natural as typing.

BW: Anything else we should know?

JC: Well, one thing I love using Snagit for (which is probably something you don't pitch heavily to corporations) is occasionally sending goofy LOLcat type images to my team. Normally, a manager shouldn't admit to such frivolity, but it's so quick and easy to do with Snagit, I feel no guilt! You can just do a Google Image Search, capture the image with Snagit, add some text, change the font to "Impact", turn on a drop-shadow, and - boom! - hilarity ensues. Whole thing takes 30 seconds. Great fun for all.

BW: What is the last video game you played?

JC: Why, The Beatles: Rock Band, of course! Actually, I have a 3 year old and a 2 month old at home, so I have very little time to get absorbed in a deep and complex game. I mostly play stuff I can pick up and put down in 5 minutes or less. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, this means I've been playing a lot of iPhone games. My latest addiction is "Canabalt", which is pretty much the ultimate mindless, quickie game. There's only one command, "jump", and a game is over in about 30 seconds.

BW: What's your favorite video game?

JC: Well, aside from the Rock Band games which, honestly, really do get the most play in my house, I'm terribly behind on keeping up with today's big games. My favorite game of all time is Starcraft - I think nothing beats a perfectly balanced RTS (Real Time Strategy) game. I've also logged a ridiculous amount of hours playing the Sims games and Half Life 2. That game truly turned managed to turn a first person shooter into an engrossing work of art.

jeff chausse.pngJeff Chausse is the Web Director at Harmonix and is responsible for managing interactive efforts for its Rock Band series of video games, most recently leading the design and development of TheBeatlesRockBand.com. Prior to working at Harmonix, Jeff has worked at Zoom Information, Hill Holliday and Groove Networks, in various technical, marketing, and managerial roles. Jeff lives in the Boston suburbs with his wife and two young children.

PowerPoint, Snagit Stamps and 64 Different Beverages

Posted on Sunday October 18, 2009

I was in Atlanta earlier this week at the PowerPoint Live conference - it was a great event that not only focused on how to use PowerPoint better, but also the art of giving better presentations and storytelling.

world of coca-cola.png

And, as you may know, I love a good challenge! PowerPoint MVP, Geetesh Bajaj from Indezine and Scrapbook Presentations, the Snagit product Manager, Tiffany Wood and I took a field trip to the World of Coca-Cola. At the end of the tour, they have a tasting room where you have the opportunity to try out 64 different types of beverages from around the world! I mean, when else would I get the opportunity to try a fizzy watermelon drink from Japan?! I went into the tour planning to take down all 64 beverages, but instead walked out defeated after trying around 30 of them (plus I came out with a headache and feeling ill)! I'll have to practice for my next trip so I can walk out victorious!

geetesh coca-cola.png

Geetesh, also let me know that he is still adding new free Snagit Stamps every day to his website, Scrapbook Presentations. Check out these stamps for Halloween! You can see all the stamps here

You can watch a tutorial to see how to make your own stamps or add them in Snagit here. And, you can find some free stamps TechSmith made here.

Any requests for stamps? What kinds of stamps would you like made for Snagit? My vote? Mustaches, beards and glasses! Or a set for travel.

Meet Tiffany Wood, Snagit Product Manager Extraordinaire

Posted on Monday September 14, 2009

I've got someone new for you to meet. I know you'll like her! Meet Tiffany Wood - She's the new Snagit Product Manager!

Don't worry, Tony Dunckel, is still with TechSmith. He's recently been promoted from Snagit Product Manager to our Director of Web and Enterprise Services and he's still wearing the hat of the Jing Product Manager. So he's still got at least one foot in the fun stuff ;-)

I grabbed a quick video with Tiffany last week. Check it out below. It runs less than 2 minutes - meet Tiffany, and even hear which is her favorite football team. Any guesses?

And, I also had a chance to ask Tiffany a few questions. Here's what she had to say...

• How have images and screenshots changed your own communication for the better?
TW: I have been using Snagit for at least seven years, well before I was lucky enough to work here at TechSmith - I cannot imagine my life without it. I use Snagit every day. Screen captures visually convey ideas and concepts, guide people through a process, and add polish to presentations.

• What do you use Snagit for primarily?
TW: Right now, I use Snagit to create presentations about Snagit, capture feedback from customers, create mockups to share ideas, and capture receipts from online transactions.

I also enjoy adding funny callouts to pictures I send to family and friends back in Wisconsin.

• What are the last three captures in your Open Captures Tray?
TW: My last three captures are a pie chart illustrating the top feature requests for Snagit, a Snagit dialog box I had a question about, and the Green Bay Packers football schedule.

• Is there one feature of Snagit that has flat-out delighted you? Tell me about it...
TW: It's difficult to pick one feature, two of my favorites are the Tray in Editor so I can easily drag multiple captures together to create a composite capture. Another favorite is whenever I capture something online, like an interesting gift idea for my sister, Snagit stores the link to the website for me so I can go back later.

Tiffany is here to help you, to listen and to continue to make Snagit even better. You'll see her on the road at Tradeshows and on Twitter at @snagit. Do you have any questions for her?

Snagit, Hockey and Playoff Beards

Posted on Friday June 12, 2009

playoffbeard.png

As you know, TechSmith is headquartered in lovely Okemos, Michigan. And, lately, I've noticed many men walking around town in beards. Now, what do Michigan and beards have in common? Well, our 'local' hockey team in Michigan, the Detroit Red Wings are in the Stanley Cup finals... tonight. And, there is a tradition that hockey players and fans will grow 'playoff beards' once their team has entered the playoffs!

Dave playoffbeard.png

So, that got me thinking... hockey, playoff beards, tech... how can we bring them all together? That lead me to thinking about the mustache custom Snagit stamp I shared earlier this week (you can download it here). Well, why not have a playoff beard custom Snagit stamp too?! Check out our Education Evangelist, Dave McCollom sporting the playoff beard stamp!

You can download your own Playoff Beard custom stamp to use in Snagit here. Enjoy! I'd love to see what you create with it... Give your boss a playoff beard, your dog, a baby... it works on anyone. :-)

You can find more info here about how to install and use custom stamps in Snagit.

The 'beard is back' as they say! And, I'll be watching the Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup tonight! ;-)

Rickrolling, Snagit and You...

Posted on Wednesday June 10, 2009

rick astley.png

If you grew up in the 80s like I did, you are probably familiar with pop singer Rick Astley. In the last few years, maybe you've heard of "Rickrolling"? Basically it is like the old bait and switch idea - you send someone a web link that misdirects someone to Rick Astley's video, " Never Gonna Give You Up". Pretty funny!

So, naturally, when I saw the tweet above from Jessica Knott, it caught my attention. Snagit AND Rick Astley! A custom stamp match made in heaven! I had to find out more! So, I contacted Jess and she was kind enough to share the custom stamp.

If you'd like your own Rick Astley stamp for Snagit, you can download it from here.

Jessica also wrote a great blog post here about how she uses Snagit 9 at Michigan State University (my alma mater!) for documentation.

chris mcqueen mustache.png

And, while we're on the topic of the 80's, you cannot talk about 80's pop stars without mentioning Hall & Oates. John Oates has a mustache that is legendary. So, I was thinking what better than a mustache stamp to go along with the Rick Astley stamp!? I tested out the mustache stamp on our Snagit trainer, Chris McQueen's pic to the left. :-)

And, I thought others might want to use the mustache stamp too (that's for you, John Quick)!. You can download the mustache Snagit stamp here.

If you'd like to make your own Snagit custom stamp, you can take any PNG, JPG, GIF, TIF or BMP. Chris McQueen from our Training Department will show you how to create and use a custom stamp in this handy screencast. It runs just over 2 minutes.

If you prefer a written tutorial, you can read here how to add a Custom Stamp to your Quick Styles Gallery in Snagit.

Chris also writes Snagit tips on Twitter. You can follow him here or TechSmith on Twitter here.

Want other stamps? You can download them here from TechSmith. Or, Geetesh Bajaj from Indezine and Scrapbook Presentations has hundreds of other free Snagit stamps available in a variety of categories here.

I want to see how you use the Rick Astley and mustache stamp! Email me the pics or post links in the comments! I'm lobbying our Creative Services Department for a set of different mustaches and eyebrows. You'd use them, wouldn't you?! Any other stamp requests?

rick astley jess.pngThanks for a good laugh, Jess! You make Snagit fun!

New Snagit Output to Screencast.com

Posted on Thursday January 15, 2009

betsy_75.png

I am told that I didn't talk much until I was two years old and then I started to speak in full sentences. Maybe it was because I had an older sister to do the talking for me. Or, maybe it was because I had nothing to say! Regardless of what the reason is, I am now trying to catch up for lost time! :-) I love to talk - online or face to face! I even talk in my sleep! You'll often find me available to chat online via Instant Messager or on Twitter. And, I often like to supplement my chats with something visual - like a Snagit screencapture! And, this is where is gets difficult...

Part of the problem with "talking" online is that it can be difficult to share screencaptures via email or chat. Files are often blocked or people can't receive or open them. It always seems to fail when I'm sending the files to them.

snagit_screencast.png

There's a new, free output for Snagit that makes it easy to share your screencaps - the Snagit Screencast.com Output. Send your Snagit screencaps to Screencast.com and then just share the link - no more messing with files being blocked or lost. Easy! This is great to use for collaborating on projects, in blog comments, Instant Messaging or on sites like Twitter.

By the way, you can learn about Snagit and TechSmith news like this through our Newsletters. You can subscribe to them via email or RSS. They're free and full of news, tips and tricks. Enjoy and start adding graphics to your chats and emails!

What program or site would you like Snagit output screencaptures to?
