Chomp, chomp chomp! Welcome ScreenChomp and TechSmith Labs!
Posted on Tuesday July 26, 2011 by Betsy Weber

Being an evangelist, by definition, means that I get to be the bearer of good tidings. Today I get to do that! I'm happy to share with you a new iPad app that we've been working on at TechSmith. Meet ScreenChomp!
ScreenChomp is a digital whiteboard that users can write and draw on with the touch of a finger. You can draw using twelve different pen colors. All activity on ScreenChomp can be easily recorded and then if you want, edited through Camtasia for Mac or Camtasia Studio. The videos produced in ScreenChomp can be downloaded as MP4 files, making them easy to share on ScreenChomp.com, Facebook, YouTube, iTunes, Blackboard and other video hosting platforms.
Why would you use a recordable whiteboard? Well, ScreenChomp lets you jot down your ideas and easily share them with everyone or a few select people. It's a helpful app for everyone, but developed with teachers and students in mind. Plus, the price is right - ScreenChomp is free!
Think about using ScreenChomp to do a variety of things like:
- Send helpful tutoring videos home with students
- Allow kids to create videos that help their classmates
- Explain complexities from afar
- Record your most recent brilliant idea
- Share doodles with friends and family
Download ScreenChomp from the Apple App Store here!
Here's a quick video of ScreenChomp in action.
Like ScreenChomp on Facebook here. Follow ScreenChomp on Twitter here
And, the good news doesn't stop with ScreenChomp. We're also launching TechSmith Labs. TechSmith labs will be the place where we can foster innovative products and features. Plus we want to make sure we receive your useful feedback to improve our existing applications.
Nitty gritty details, features and capabilities of ScreenChomp:
- Record and share audio and video presentations
- Import background images to annotate and narrate
- Import and rotate pictures
- HD MP4 video output with multiple sharing options
- Twelve pen colors
- Free video hosting on ScreenChomp.com
- Ability to edit content in Camtasia Studio and Camtasia for Mac
- ScreenChomp is available for the iPad (iPad1 and 2), iOS 4.2 or later.
- ScreenChomp can import one image as a background before the recording starts. You can scale and rotate that image, but you cannot import more than one or after the recording starts.

Any chance something equivalent is on it's way for Android and/or Windows?

This is great, I've tried it and it works like a champ (although the graphics are a little young'ish, maybe it can be skinned for different markets...). The first, quick test I made was to annotate, with pens and voice, a medical image (a microscopic view of tumor cells), the way a pathologist might educate a colleague--or patient--about the tumor (I have lots of pathologist friends).
Have people at Techsmith made lots of examples already, that we might see (for inspiration, etc)? Or maybe users can be invited to submit their own eg's, to become part of a gallery of examples? There seem to be so many uses for Chomp that it would be a really fun and broad to see how people think the might use it.

If this had other whiteboard features like a text tool, I'd buy it.

I can see this as very useful for science field work. Example: http://www.screenchomp.com/t/R5Z0J0ztW
Thanks techsmith.

This is a great application, which could be improved even more by:
1) Having more than 1 background image available, i.e. the ability to put in several background images on different pages and being able to annotate.
2) Upload facility to Youtube, or download option for the created chomp
I also would absolutely love(!) to have an Android version of Chomp - it would certainly hit a huge market.
Thanks to the developers of thsi app - it is great (in my opinion better than the highly advertised Showme app).

Is there a way to save my videos (chomps?) for sharing through other means, or can they only be shared through your site, or on Facebook? I'd love to make use of this for a variety of purposes, but I typically would not want them to be visible to others without my permission. It would also be nice to be able to enhance these with a video app and/or incorporated into other media, including videos and Powerpoints.

@Peter, @Ryan, & @Dean - These are all superb suggestions...thanks for sharing them! I'll make sure the product manager sees them if he hasn't already. You can also post ideas like this on our feedback forum so other users can vote them up and the developers can follow up with you if they have questions.

@Kristen - To rotate a background image, open the importer tool, place two fingers on the image, and twist. You can also use the normal iOS pinch gesture to scale the image.

We are using screen chomp with some 1st graders to create ads for a product they made. We have 4 screenchomp sessions that create the ad. Is there any way to hook them all together?
