Episode 1 of The Forge is in the Can!
Posted on Thursday September 2, 2010 by Betsy Weber
Write this day down in history... Today we shot the first episode of The Forge!
In this episode, Matt Pierce talked with Jon Udell all about screencasting. One of the things they discussed was the history of the name "Screencast". You can see a list of all the names suggested for this genre of videos here. Chris McQueen also reviewed the Blue Yeti microphone and I talked with Matt about who is screencasting and what makes a great screencast. The screencasts I referenced were: "Again & Again" music video by the Bird and the Bee, the Lab Rats, Coding by the Sea from Red Gate Software and Google's "Parisian Love" screencast.
The video runs (35:38).
If you tuned in to watch us shoot the show live, you will have noticed that the live stream was choppy. My apologies to anyone who tried to tune in. We're researching and running some tests to fix this for the next show. Stay tuned.
You can also view The Forge on our YouTube channel here.
We want to make this show to be a useful resource for you. Let us know what you want and need. What would you like to see on future episodes of The Forge? Topics? Guests? Themes?

Awesome Job on making the video for "The Forge". The only thing or criticism I have is that it would be nice for the PC Users to see how you make these videos too. Maybe have two versions. One for Mac Users and one for PC Users. Is that something you are looking into? Also, in future episodes are you planning on covering more of the how to's videos for users to learn the software and some of the effects you are making and using? Let us know and keep up the great work.

Good first episode, I look forward to future ones.
One question about the making of the video. What type/brand of lavalier mic are you using for this and other videos there at Techsmith? ... and are they wireless?
Thanks for all you guys do, love your products!

@Roger: Hmm, seems to be working here. Are you sure that it was all cached up? It's a pretty big video at 1.1GB, so...maybe that could be it?
If you find you still can't view it here on the Visual Lounge, maybe try it on the YouTube channel instead. It's broken up into three parts, but here is the playlist that should let it play in order:

@Donald: Great question, and maybe we'll even talk about them on a future show!
In the meantime, the wireless mics you see in the video are made by "Shure", and they are model PG88. You can find the product link here:
http://www.shure.com/americas/products/wireless-systems/performance-gear-systems/pg88-dual-channel-diversity-receiver
In the past we have also used a Sennhesier ew100-series wireless mic, similar to this one (link only shows the transmitter, not the receiver):
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/professional_wireless-microphone-systems_handheld-transmitter_ew-100-series_021415
The Shure is a dual-mic system, that allows for two people to be mic'd at once, which is why we are using that for productions like "The Forge".
Hope that helps!

You've got to be kidding. A full minute and a half of intro before you actually start. Even worse, the intro is just plain irritating. Please cut it down, or out completely. An intro should never be longer that 30 seconds, and even that is long.
