What's New and Shiny? Meet Snagit 10!
Posted on Monday May 10, 2010 by Betsy Weber
There's a new kid on the block! No, I'm not talking about the boy band from the 80's. I'm talking about a new release of Snagit!
The Snagit team has been hard at work listening to your feedback and working on Snagit. And, I'm happy to announce that Snagit 10 is available today! I hope you'll try it out!
What's new in Snagit 10? Lots of new features and functionality including:
- All-in-One Capture - This is my favorite feature and saves me a lot of time! With Snagit 10, you can select a full screen, region, window or auto-scrolling (vertical and horizontal) area during the capture process with a single hot key or mouse click. Snagit 10 gives you an enhanced magnifier window and cross-hairs to give you exact, down-to-the-pixel precision when performing a region capture. Want to see it in action? Here's a screencast (runs 1:11 minutes). Or, prefer a written tutorial? You can learn about the All-in-One Capture here.

- Transparency - Have you ever tried snagging an image that has rounded corners or has an irregularly shaped edge? In the past, you'd get a white box around the whole image and extra parts of your background showing. With Snagit 10, you can remove the solid white background to allow captured images to float seamlessly on web pages, complex presentation slides and color documents. Check out this screencast all about transparency here (54 seconds).
- New text possibilities - Did you know you can capture and edit hard-to-grab text from websites and applications with Snagit? Not many people know about the Text Capture option in Snagit. We've updated the Text Capture feature so you can capture not only the text from a website but also its formatting. Edit text color, font style, size and more with easy-to-use Snagit editing tools. Rotate text boxes a full 360 degrees.
- Direct output to Screencast.com - I often like to share what I capture to get feedback or input on my screen captures. With Snagit 10, there is a new Screencast.com direct output that makes it easy to share and store your screen captures. You can make your capture on Screencast.com public, private or password protected plus viewers can leave comments on your capture. You can see a screencast about this feature here (51 seconds).
- New edge effects - Snagit 10 has some great new edge effects that give your captures a fresh, modern look like a page curl. We also added a new horizontal and vertical cut-out effects so you can remove unwanted sections of a web page or image. You can see a quick screencast of the cut-out effect in action here (40 seconds).
- Auto-scroll enhancement - Snagit 10 now has a faster auto-scroll capture which includes a new notification window to signify when scrolling is in progress.
- Editor Color Options - You asked and we listened. One of our popular requests was to have the option to change the color of the Snagit 10 editor background. Change it to blue or silver, or keep the default black.
As always, you can try out a full featured, 30 day trial copy of Snagit 10 by downloading it here. We also have lots of new free training and tutorials all about Snagit 10 which you can visit here.
I can't wait for you to try Snagit 10! Thanks to your feedback, we can keep improving Snagit. So, please keep the feedback coming! Feel free to leave a comment here on the blog or email us your feedback.

Did it fix the scrolling window capture in Firefox? Been beta testing the MAC version and not sure if there are enough features to make me want to upgrade to V 10 since I will be paying for MAC version soon (I hope)!

Hi Ray - great question!
Yes, scrolling windows in Firefox has been fixed with Snagit 10.
There's also a work-around for those still on Snagit 9.1.3 - you can see how to fix here: http://bit.ly/9b5J4v
You can try Snagit 10 out for 30 days and then make your decision. Thanks for using the Mac version too! Much appreciated!

Wow, I wasn't expecting a new version of Snagit. Can't wait to try it out ... downloading the trial right now. Transparency support was the one thing Snagit was lacking, so should be great!

Hmm ... there still isn't a default shadow that looks just like the standard active window shadow in Windows Aero. Too bad ... I was hoping it would capture the actual shadow from Windows Aero in Windows 7/Vista, or at least capture let you easily add a similar shadow...

@Matthew - thanks for the feedback. If I understand correctly, you'd like to have a glow or shadow around the entire capture? We don't have that ability, but you could create it sort of with a border, then fade it.
Is that what you're looking for? I've let the Snagit team know your feedback and they're add it as a feature request. Any other feedback?
@jess - Squeeeee! I'm totally telling!

@Betty - Yes, I think you've got it! Thanks for letting the team know the request. Here's a quick example - Snagit 10's capture is on the right, and I'd like the shadow to look more like the Windows's default as shown on the far left. In the middle is a compromise-of-sorts with a better shadow from another app.
Still, Snagit 10 is by far the best edition yet, and I'm really enjoying the trial. If it got better shadows too, that'd be the cherry on top! :)

Wow! TechSmith you have done it again. This is going to be great, thanks for the improvements. I know I am going to find the All-In-One feature very useful. I will definitely be using this a lot and bragging up the new features to everyone I know.
Thanks again for listening to the end-users. That is what makes the company a cut above the rest.

You can do everything in this program and more in Photoshop. Trust me, i am a graphics designer for the marketing end of Goldman Sachs. I have used Photoshop for years. Don't bother with this BS, get photoshop and you can way more.

So I upgrade to 10 and need to get some work done. Edge Effects dropdown doesn't have the choices specified in the help file and when I try the above 40 sec. screencast for new edge effects, it ain't there!
I hope you guys haven't bloated a really nice tool to something that needs a whole lot of study like PhotoShop.

Very cool feature! Trying to "snag" the capture vertical scroll button can be a bit of a bugger though!
