Meet Camtasia Studio 7 plus Camtasia for Mac 1.1!
Posted on Tuesday March 30, 2010 by Betsy Weber
The day is finally here! And, I'm excited to report two good pieces of news! Not only do we have a new version of Camtasia Studio 7 available today, but we also have a new release for Camtasia for Mac 1.1! You can download trials of each here.
Over the past few days, I've shared with you some of the new features coming in Camtasia Studio 7. The last one I wanted to share with you was Camtasia Studio's new library. The library makes your videos look awesome - it comes stocked with a range of professionally-designed assets like audio effects, background images, and more from Digital Juice. You can find additional free library content here. The library makes it easy to store your callouts, title slides and other assets so you can use them again in your next project or even share them with colleagues.
Check out the quick video below to see the new library in action. It runs less than a minute long.
What's new in Camtasia Studio 7? Here's a quick list:
- Library for reusable content
- New callouts (including sketch motion and keystrokes)
- New cursor effects and workflow
- Copy and Paste functionality on timeline
- Improved SmartFocus performance
- Improved recording performance
- Improved YouTube integration
- Improved Audio Enhancements
If you want to see the entire list of what's new, please visit here.
And, while you talked and shared feedback, we listened and took notes. Camtasia for Mac 1.1 is also available today with your top feature requests added! It's a free upgrade for all Camtasia for Mac 1.0 owners.
Included in the update to Camtasia for Mac is the option to do a region recording. You can select a custom area or from preset dimensions to record only a part of your screen. This can eliminate the need to crop and zoom. Use multiple displays? You can also choose which monitor you'd like to record.
Also added in Camtasia for Mac 1.1 is the ability to pause your recording. Perfect if you take a breather or recompose yourself. Plus, there were several audio enhancements as well. You can do a voice-only recording and capture the microphone audio only (skip recording the screen video). It allows you to record a voiceover. You can also scrub your audio clean from distractions like keyboard clicks, fan noise, and overly loud or uneven voice levels. Effects include clipping reduction, clicking reduction, dynamics processor, noise reduction and pitch adjustment.
You can see more information about what's new in Camtasia for Mac 1.1 here.
Enough talk about the new releases! Go try them out. I'd love to hear what you think and your feedback! Enjoy!

Downloading 165.1MB now... I'll just start reading the (extra long?) newsletter that just got released while waiting for it to finish.

With these two things
- Choose the screen to record
- Easily select a window or screen region to record
You made my day!
Thanks Techsmith

I've allready downloaded the testversion. I love what I see. I would buy the upgrade immediately but I have to wait for the german version :-(
Hope it will come soon.

If you import a v6 project with known memory leak issues, is it assumed that you would still get memory leak errors due to the camrec's not being recorded using v7? As I have seen you have bullet-pointed 'improved recording performance'.
First impressions are good, i like the new animations and callouts, it would have been nice to have a few of the camtasia mac functions, as well as the function to order the pan/zoom above callouts, as if you tilt the view, the callout remains "2D", so you have bounce video tracks to get around this, which is quite time consuming.

A couple of tasty new features, but in my mind, not worth $150 to upgrade from v6.

My first screencast with CS7 is now being rendered before automatically being uploaded to YouTube in 720p format (really nice that I can set the video to 'private' so that YT can render the HD version first before I publish it).
I just wanted to say thank you for getting rid of the "Finished" buttons that are needed in CS6 to switch between the call-out, zoom-pan and other areas. That speed/ease of use increase alone would have been worth $150 to upgrade.
I also like the counter during recording. Sure, I could just keep a silent clock running in the background, but when planning to upload to YouTube always knowing how much time you've got left is great.
I find it strange that even when I lock an audio track is still is affected by the audio enhancements. When using one of the provided intro clips (nice btw!) I don't want that audio to be modified, so I have to remember to clean up the audio of the recording first before adding the intro. But locked should really be locked (meaning unaffected by edits)
One possibly for the wishlist: the media clips are in 800x600 format. With zoom/pan I was able to make them fill the screen of my 720p recording without borders. While the media clips are probably aimed at more novice users (that don't create their own intro) using zoom/pan to achieve this is probably too much for them.
This new versions saves me time and frustration (caused by unnecessary clicks or things that don't work like I expect them to)

Does the support for Windows 7 include the 64bit version?

Thanks for the comments everyone! @Pierre: we do have the widescreen versions of the Digital Juice assets available for download on our Library Media Page. You can get them here: http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/librarymedia.asp
There are also additional assets not included with the install of Camtasia Studio 7 from this page. You can also access this page from within Camtasia Studio 7 by going to File>Library>Get media online. I hope this helps!

@Malcolm: Camtasia Studio 7 has been tested on both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit. It works on both.

@Shane: thanks for the tip. They are widescreen but still "only" 800x450 so when I'm creating a project in 1280x720 I still need to use zoom-pan.
Note: I know that these are freebies, not complaining, just pointing out that this may confuse the users that you're aiming at with these.
I've been having problems with the direct YouTube upload. I was able to upload a short recording, but the longer ones stop at about 50%-60%. Direct upload of the file to YouTube was no problem, I'm on a fixed line (1Mbit upload) and I tried retry too often to suspect network hickups.
Also, I think the compression level for YouTube is set too high. I know that keeps the files small, but you can clearly see the artifacts in the intro of this screencast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0XlayVht8I (it is most visible in the intro, the rest of the video is ok as far as artifacts go).
If I use the custom production settings, the file does get a lot bigger (but well within YouTube limits) but the artifacts are gone. Maybe a "upload to YouTube" option as part of the custom production settings?

I downloaded a trial version of 7 and started to edit a training video recorded in 6.
I like 7 but I have a few comments:
The new color scheme for the audio tracks looks very cool, but on first use it is harder to work with than the green on white in 6. It would help to have more contrast. It's hard to do the very fine editing that some of my work calls for.
Our training videos mix slides and demos; the demarcation between the end of one track and the start of a new one is not as clear as it was in 6. I think there's some sacrifice of clarity for this color scheme. I kept wishing for a new skin so I could change the colors.
Finally, I found an interesting bug. I was working on a Camtasia camproj which included camrec that had been edited in 6. I cut 2.5 seconds out of the audio/video. The audio for the next 2.5 seconds after the cut did not play. I started a new camproj, imported the same camrec, did the same edit, with no problem. So it's not an audio problem; it's my guess is the problem is an artifact of the camproj. I did save the version 7 camproj and try again with the same result. I then removed the camrec, copied it, and replaced it in the timeline and I could do the edit.
All that being said, there are some great new features in this version of Camtasia. And TechSmith support is always quickly, courteously, and wonderfully helpful.

The upgrades to Camtasia|Mac look good. I haven't looked at this since the release because I really need a mechanism for including a table of contents that allows viewers to jump forward and backward to designated points in a presentation. Is there any word on whether a method for easily incorporating a table of contents will be included in a future release?

@Pierre: You're not alone. The upload to YouTube directly from CS7 does not work :-(

I like the new interface, and it now takes a lot less time to edit. The placement of the keys is great and the fact that I can now press the delete button instead of having to always click on the scissors is the best!
But...I am doing a lot with Camtasia today, I am layering about six tracks of callouts and about 3 tracks of audio. When I produce the final project, it drops the audio. Bummer. Am I trying to do too much for the software. I'm used to working with Final Cut Pro, so while Camtasia is great for my needs on this project, I'm not sure if I'm trying to do too much.

Loving the update and the program in general, but really desperately need the marker and table of contents feature. I do educational programming and like many of the people on this board definitely need the TOC when I have really long (boring) training videos and the like.
