Snagit - Best of the Best
Posted on Sunday July 12, 2009 by Betsy Weber
One of my favorite blogs is Lifehacker. The blog is all about getting things done and who doesn't need tips about how to improve that? I learn something new in every post.
Periodically Lifehacker asks readers for their picks for software, hardware, and other tools. We're honored that Snagit made the cut for their March - June 2009 list. You can see all of the Best of the Best: Hive Five Winners, March through June 2009 here.
Thanks to everyone who voted for Snagit! I appreciate it! To celebrate, I'll give 5 prize packs away that include a copy of Snagit v9, t-shirt, and other fun items. Just leave a comment on this blog entry with your suggestion for a future blog post. Post your comment by 10:00am EST on Friday, July 17, 2009 to qualify. I'll pick 5 winners at random.

I'm new to TechSmith products. I recently purchased Camtasia and I'm having lots of fun learning to use it. I would love to see a blog on the similarities and differences between Snagit and Jing. I use Jing and don't understand why I might also use Snagit. You're not talking to a techie here. :-)

Love SnagIt- How did it all get started and how did the name SnagIt get chosen.

To Betsy-- SnagIt is by far the BEST screen capture and annotation tool I've ever used! I recently got a netbook, and I don't have SnagIt on it yet . . . I never realized how much I missed it until it wasn't there!
Re:Comment by Jan Schwartz-- Jing's best if you're interested in posting your captures to Screencast-- the integration makes it easy, fast, and simple. As for wondering why you'd want SnagIt . . . the real question is "Why WOULDN'T you!" =) SnagIt allows you to do so much more with your captures than just arrows, highlights, and text boxes. SnagIt has a full-featured editor that is powerful and versatile. Also, there are a variety of capture profiles and options that make it far more powerful than Jing for this purpose. Give it a try, and you won't be disappointed!

SnagIt = best value I've ever received from a piece of software. Convinced my IT guys to buy it for me at the office but I'd love to see everyone have it. How about a blog post about large corporate environments and the various jobs that can benefit from it? I'm in accounting, for example, and I use it almost every day. Others around me want to know how I do the things I do and they want the software too...but IT feels like it is not necessary except for their department.

How about something on how snagit integrates with other techsmith products and web svcs like blogs, etc.? Thanks!

I'd like to read more about SnagIt tagging and date features. Love the power that SnagIt gives me to manage lots of images and do more with what I have!

How about how Snagit is used with other non-techsmith tools...web 2.0 tools to capture images, buttons and banners for blogs,

I'd love to see some good examples of SnagIt integrating with Camtasia and Jing. An example of how powerfully all of the Techsmith products can work together would be great to see. I use them everyday, but am sure there's a lot of integration I don't know about!

Is there a Snagit extension for Firefox? If not, what would one look like?

I am in a new position where I will be moving face to face applications training to online format as well as developing training on how to use our new LMS. This job would be impossible without SnagIt v9 and the opportunity to replace volumes of text with excellent quality annotated screen captures and animations.

I don't know that I have any specific request for postings - sometimes I don't know I needed to know something until I saw it here - then it's a lightbulb moment and I've learned a new way to use SnagIt or Jing. Much like Laurie I've been tasked with creating videos and podcasts to replace face to face trainings. Techsmith tools help a lot.

Snagit definitely deserves to be credited as "The Best of the Best!" I have been using this product for about four years now and it is always one of the first tools I turn to - I can't imagine working without it. In fact, I loved using it so much at the office that I had to purchase my own license for home.
Snagit makes creating everything from reports to presentations to quick edits for web images so easy. And the product is very intuitive, making the learning curve minimal.
With Snagit I am able to create engaging e-learning presentations right in PowerPoint and then import my slides into Captivate. The results look like they were created in Flash! While I have not mastered making great flash presentations, my custom animated slides made with images that are first edited in Snagit and then have custom animation added to them in PowerPoint certainly can fool users.
Thank you Snagit! Your product makes my work look professional, clean, clear, consistent and polished.

So glad to see my name as one of the winners - just checking to see if the other winners have received the email or am I the only one that has not received any notification via email. I emailed Betsy but no reply there - with her schedule I don't want to seem like a nag - just curious - also don't know if the problem is on my end with email so thought I'd try here.
I love the products and want to use the free copy to share with another.

BEWARE OF USING "Preview" after you compose your comment. Previewing changes the "Captcha" text, so if you see that your comment is just perfectly composed and click "Post Comment," without noticing that that "Captcha" text changed (AS A RESULT OF PREVIEWING THE COMMENT), your comment and everything else you typed is deleted.
TechSmith always did such a fine job with SnagIt. It amazes me that it would impose such a horrid user interface on previously delighted customers who wanted to share important comments. I wonder if this interface is decimating TechSmith's client base. I hope not, but it irritated me greatly. -- TAP

Thomas - sorry about the problem you had posting a comment on the blog. My apologies. We were getting some spam bots hitting the blog and had to implement something to prevent them. Unfortunately it is an additional step for people to leave a comment.
Feel free to email me directly too - b.weber(at)techmith.com

Short version of last week's comment: I hit the last straw point with Windows on 16 FEB 2009 and bought a new MacBook Pro 17" with Anti-Glare screen. Since I need to run MS Access I installed Parallels 4.0 and Windows XP Professional (SP2), and my MS Office XP Developer Edition. I run the Windows SW in a Virtual Machine using Parallels. I typically run Parallels in the Coherence Mode so that I can move back and forth between Windows and OS X programs.
Is it known whether one can run SnagIt on Windows in Parallels' Coherence Mode, and use it to operate upon OS X Windows, specifically scrolling them as needed to make a capture? If I must wait much longer for SnagIt for OS X I might try the above to give the functionality I need as a temporary workaround, till SnagIt for OS X becomes available. -- TAP
