Camtasia for the Mac Update...
Posted on Saturday January 3, 2009 by Betsy Weber
What's the old saying? 'Time flies when you're having fun!'. Well, I have been having lots of fun and I can't believe it is 2009 already. I swear time is moving faster. It has been awhile since I've given you an update on Camtasia for the Mac and I thought you might like a glimpse of some of our progress.
We've been running some usability tests on Camtasia for the Mac which have been very insightful. And, we've been making changes based on the feedback we're getting. Also, to give you an idea of its look and feel, here are some recent screenshots of the Recorder and Main User Interface.

And, in the software world, I've learned nothing is final until it is released to the public. So, please keep in mind that these are pre-release screenshots and things are subject to change. We're looking at a mid-2009 release. I do not have pricing info or final feature list for you just yet. As soon as I have more details, I'll post them here.
And, again, let me extend our thanks - we're building Camtasia for the Mac based on your feedback and comments. So, keep them coming. We appreciate your input and insight!

Woo-hoo!! It's about time. I was wondering whether Camtasia would show up for the Mac this year. I use Camtasia for all of my PC tutorials and reviews. Being able to skip the trip to the secondary video editor is really a great feature. Most of my videos are created on a Mac, so I have to rely on FCP, Adobe or even QuickTime Pro for even the most basic of editorial tasks. I can't wait to see Camtasia Studio on OSX.

This is great (overdue) news about the Mac version of Camstasia. Thank you for the update.
One of the things that plague the internet media sphere is BAD AUDIO. If you would entertain a couple of suggestions I would like to add to your feature request list.
I see that you are planning some form of VU meter, which is great, but it seems that the legions of internet media contributors do not know what that little meter with the bouncing lights is, or how to use it. This simple oversight is unfortunate for the consumer of this content.
VU, or Volume Units http://cli.gs/pNdBsN are a tool for the producer of the audio portion of any media to be able to measure and monitor for a standard listening level. A standard is established to provide a benchmark for all media consumed on the same device to sound the same to the consumer. In other words, a way for the producer to create content with a standard listening level. The goal being to provide all of the programming (radio, television, and now the exploding world of digital, internet delivered, media) in a manner that lets the consumer enjoy a standard listening level without needing to constantly adjust the listening volume.
To this end I have two suggestions:
1) An input gain control to be able to increase the traditionally low audio levels caused by the producer being positioned too far from the mic (the new built-in mic's or webcam mic's for example) so that those bouncing lights can now mean something to them. Have more divisions in green, three in yellow and a single red overload light. Document that you would like to keep your sound source bouncing in the yellow Instruct the user how to adjust the input gain to keep it out of the red and bouncing in the yellow.
2) Provide an easy function for "leveling" the finished program from the intro music to the end sting and all of the content in between so the consumer does not have to be "riding" the volume controls. Integrate a software leveler, the delightfully simple Levelator http://cli.gs/BXzhnA from The Conversations Network is a good example.
These two simple additions would go a long way to improving the consuming experience of this flood of new, Human Powered Media, that products such as yours are making possible.
Thank you for the opportunity to contribute. I am available for consulting and beta testing. Be well.

@Ted Wahler: I share your ideas, in particular: http://torley.com/whats-the-1-feature-most-audio-recording-apps-are-missing
I also hope Mac Camtasia allows recording of multiple input sources at once to *independent* audio tracks, like iShowU can do with Soundflower: it records USB mic *and* Mac system sounds.

Can't wait for the tool. I'm hoping Camtasia provides better options than recent competitors around screen res mapping -- recording on a large monitor, but finding a way to scale it appropriately for regular users -- either by recording an area of the screen, by zooming (including for the entire preso, or by transcoding. I also agree some sort of audio "levellator" type function would be valuable. If the rest of the product works like the windows version, then we're all set. A crossgrade from Windows pricing would seal the deal. Once this is out, I'm out of the wincapture business entirely.
Hurry, because the natives are restless.

Does Camtasia for Mac offer outputs in the same varied formats as on Windows? On Windows Camtasia offers so many output formats, although I almost always use flash. However all current Mac screen capture solutions only output in Quicktime .mov, which I find makes much larger files.
Please please tell me that there will be lots of output format options! :)
Also will I be able to transfer / open my existing Camtasia files from Windows and edit them on my Mac?

Now that you've mentioned a mid-year release, I wonder if the wiley folks over at Telestream will amp up their efforts to come out with 'ScreenFlow on Steroids' a couple of months earlier? I'm sure they are stoked by their 'Best in Show' award at Macworld 09. Hope you are building a real hands-down, league of its own, world class winner that puts all others to shame. Now quit goofing off and please get back to work! :)

I need this now! I also need to the ability to edit Jing SWF or MP4 movies with Camtasia Studio on the Mac. I need the ability to easily create cbts with multi-level table of contents... like Camtasia Theatre... but on the Mac, but that Camtasia Theater needs an overhaul as well to compete with Articulate Presenter. It needs to publish more organized files... not just throw 200 files into a folder. I want to use Jing to easily create hundreds of training videos and then use Camtasia Theater on the Mac to put them all into an interface shell with a mult-level table of contents... and edit them and add zoom ins and call outs, etc.

This is definitely good news. I'd like to add another request. I hope there will be a Record function added to both Keynote and PowerPoint.

Just import your Jing or Screenflick MP4 movie into Imovie 09 and edit away. The new iLife update is worth every penny.
It's very easy and saves buying yet more unneccesary software. Camtasia will score when it integrates with PowerPoint for Mac, would be even better if it worked with Keynote.
Ironically Keynote 09 also allows you to export in MP4 format and allows editing in iMovie 09, but hey you already know that.
If Camastia were to become interactive, like Articulate Engage and Studio 09, in a mac environment then they would pull in the crowds and my money.

Exactly what Chaim Bacon said.
#1 Export formats. Flash has won the online video war, plus you can have a TOC and offset PIP. Be nice to fade PIP in and out, also zoom in (cover the screen) and back down to small size again so you see the presenter every now and then.
#2 I love the ability of Camtasia to add WMVs and M4V downloads all at once.
#3 Keynote integration would be nice
With this I'll be able to turn boring business presentation PPTs into semi-interactive, user-driven, navigable online video presentations. Using my Mac.

I agree that integration with Keynote would be awesome... I would want this feature more then integration with PowerPoint on the Mac as Keynote is a much slicker application. I'm not sure if this was stated already, but having a multi-level table of contents with Camtasia for the Mac is crucial for what I do. I know that the current version of Camtasia Studio has this feature when using Camtasia Theater, but when you publish the file everything is just dumped into one folder and this is just not acceptable when publishing to a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM. Its ok for web publishing because no one will ever see all those files, but not when publishing for CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Articulate Presenter publishes a multi-level TOC for CD-ROM delivery quite nicely with just two folders, a single html file and a self executable file. The only problem with Articulate Presenter is that you are forced to use PowerPoint and it is very slow when you get over 100 slides, it crashes a lot and it takes forever to import .swf files. Camtasia Theater is better on that regard as it allows you to drag and drop an entire folder of .swf files into the Camtasia Theater TOC window and uses the .swf file name for the TOC name.... that saves an enormous amount of time, but the whole Multilevel TOC feature in Camtasia Studio is a bit clumsy and visually difficult to organize. That area needs improvement. It should be very simple... Just drag and drop your nested folders into the window and then retain the folder structure (which it currently does not). Make it easy to adjust the nesting of the TOC sub-levels. Make the Mac version awesome, easy to use, fast and feature rich and Mac users all over will praise TechSmith! What about the option of publishing to a Mobile Me or .Mac account? Or publishing to the iPhone and Sony PSP? Now that would be way cool! Include some 3D effects and transitions and a crystal clear zoom in feature.
Does anyone know how to convert a Jing .swf file into MP4 video to edit?

I forgot to mention that having the ability to record the Mac's internal audio in addition to a microphone (simultaneously) would be a very welcome and noteworthy feature for making training movies for applications that include audio like Apple's GarageBand, SoundTrack Pro, Logic Studio, Final Cut Pro, etc.. It's a lot more work when you have to record a voice over separate and the current Jing work around is ok, but still doesn't allow for you to record a microphone and the Mac's internal audio at the same time.

Camtasia on Mac is great.. But I know for a fact that there are those that would rather see SnagIt on the Mac first.
Can we get any sort of update on that? Is it going to happen? If so, is there a timeframe for it?
I hate not having the tools I need for getting screen captures in Documentation and such because the tools that are available right now are sub-par compared to SnagIt on Windows.

Camtasia for the MAC will be a winner product! So many educating professionals, especially learning content designers, are MAC users (for obvious reasons). I applaud TechSmith's entry into this very important development phase. I'd highly suggest a BETA test team to wring out the bugs and provide valuable during the BETA phase. Let me know if you need help with this. I spent 30 years leading R&D teams in both hardware and software development before going into education.

Camstasia on Macs? I can't believe this is finally happening. Thank you thank you. I think you should try to the software lighter on resources than Screenflow and more elegant than jingproject - please no orange/yellow colored theme to the software. :-]
Pricing should not blast past Screenflow or similar software $99 is great, $199 is acceptable, $299 is a sure to move folks to Screenflows offering.

Awesome to hear about it, yes time does fly we are already starting May 2009 and I'm even more excited because we are getting closer to the releasing date.
I'm working on both PC and Mac and it troubles me a lot having to record on PC and bring it over to the Mac to improve sound. I've tried some software like Final Cut and Adobe Premiere and while both can be great, they are rather slow. I switched over to a Mac to be able to produce audio and video faster but so far I haven't found any software comparable to the versatility and quickness to Camtasia.
I use a pro version of Jing to capture with the iMac and it is great, except I have to upload the videos and edit them on Youtube. Miss the callouts.
I agree with many of the comments here, specialy with those about implementing audio controllers.
I would like to have an improvement particularly on rendering with different codecs and have an easier to use timeline, so we can insert layers without any hassle.
I love the screen shot that shows a recorded video with a video on top using the iCamera. Love that feat.
I tried ScreenFlow, software with similiar feature, but it kept crashing and eating too much resources.
I agree with pricing, I know the economic crysis is affecting us all but perhaps you can come up with a bundle or discount for people who've already bought Jing.
Anyway can't wait you finish and polish Camtasia for Mac. Best luck!

You guys REALLY need to make sure that the MAC version is cheaper than the Windows version. If the MAC version is $150-200. You will have ridiculous adoption from schools, universities, corporations and government. If you make it the same price, people would not have a reason to purchase the version MAC really.
Lower the price and please release! The natives are definitely restless!

Yes, I am stuck in Windows hell until the Mac Camtasia comes out. I my Macs set for dual boot...just to a can run this product.
On the Mac scene, I haven't seen any decent recorders, that compress and out put nicely to Flash. All the other bells and whisles are create...but I need good recording, high quality, squished down really small for flash!!!
Come on baby!!! Bring Daddy his Mac Camtasia!!!

It is good customer service to keep your clients informed. Looks like the last time anything meaningful posted was in Jan 09.
Can someone in the official capacity please provide an updated date.
Thanks

Thanks for the decoders for MAC. I am able to watch video using camtasia. The audio is jerky and almost inaudible and does not seem to synchronize with the video..

I can't wait for a Mac version. A pitty such brilliant and easy to use software run on unreliable pc platform! Hope you will develop Camtasia studio as a plug in for Final Cut Pro, that is getting industry standard in video editing, and that only need a good screen recorder like camtasia studio

Please hurry! Camtasia on my Vista machine actually makes me cry sometimes when I am in a hurry to complete a learning object. My shop has three iMacs and two MacBook Pros on which I use Jing. I'd love to use SnagIt and Camtasia on them instead. I transfer work between the Macs and the PC via external storage devices. My Screencast.com account is actually my Firefox homepage on my iMac.

Worse thing any company can do is to not to communicate what is going on.
In my book it is OK to make a promise and then break it, as long as you keep us informed. Just keeping silent is BAD for the reputation.

Just got off the phone with Sales and this is what they had to say:
1. The product is still in user testing
2. The sales lady could not remember what date they had posted for the release
3. When reminded of mid 2009, she responded by saying well it did not come out in June and it will not come out in July, but it will definitely be out in 2009.
When probed a little more she said it will be out in 2009, maybe mid to late 2009.
I call this BS.
I am now evaluating the following which are both great.
Screenium by Synium Software http://www.synium.de/products/screenium/index.html
Screenflow by Telestream http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm
Both look and work great. Shame on TechSmith for making people wait and wait and wait.
I have a business to run and just can't hang around on empty promises.

I have been a Camtasia user for the last 4 years. I have heard the rumor that a Mac version would be released since I started using the product. So what't the deal? The site claims a mid 2009 release, and it's July... Are we there yet?

Hi everyone, its Troy.
I'm truly sorry for the delays and that I set wrong expectations in January. I used to run my own business in years past, and I know how much I relied on software vendors to get my job done. I'm sorry we're done just yet.
What's the status?
Camtasia for the Mac is in beta testing. Thanks for the many, many offers to help beta test. I wish we could accommodate all requests to participate in the beta. But, we're trying to keep the size manageable, so we can effectively listen and respond.
Not surprisingly, our beta testers are finding features that need tweaking, bugs that need fixing and some workflows that need to be ironed out.
Why the delay?
We want to address the above mentioned features, bugs and workflow issues. We want to have a good mixture of stability, performance and features which you all expect. We have one shot at making a good first impression and we don't want to squander that.
When is it going to ship?
Well, I made the mistake of giving a date prematurely last time. So, I'll try to be more conservative by simply saying that we expect to have Camtasia for the Mac out in the second half of this year. Forgive me if that sounds like I'm punting -- I recognize that we're already in the second half of the year. But, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I appreciate all the comments in this blog... the offers to help, the 'keep up the good work' and even the 'shame on you for making us wait' comments. I'm grateful for the promptings and the passion. :)
One a final note, I've used Camtasia for the Mac for many months on real-world productions where I was under the gun. I'm confident this will be one of, if not, THE best software apps TechSmith's ever made.

Hi Troy,
Can I be a beta tester?
Also, I I buy the windows version, will the liscence work on myMac?
Thanks:-)

@ sprale: the most conservative estimate I can give at this time is the second half of this year. Not trying to be coy, just cautious so we won't need to reset expectations again.
@ imacaddict: we'd love to get your opinion again after you get a chance to use it. :)
@ sean: thanks for the offer. We've got a full compliment of beta testers at this point. Regarding licenses, we'll be announcing the licensing policies when we get a bit closer to launch.

Does this mean their is chance for a linux version also? There would (I guess) be much less work to do going from the mac version to linux than there was for windows to mac. Even skype has managed all 3 platforms.

Hi Troy! Thanks for the update! I was starting to think you got sick and the project fell through the cracks...
I just have a simple question that will help me TREMENDOUSLY while I wait for the release of Camtasia for Mac.
I am a college professor and am planning to rebuild a couple of courses. I just need to know if Camtasia for Mac (Maybe you should call it "Mactasia" to differentiate it) will integrate with Keynote, Office 08 for Mac, or both. This simple point will allow me to move forward with building my slide presentations for my online courses.
Thanks for the work. I can't tell you how excited I am about this product finally being available on Mac so I can stop running VM on my Macbook!

hahaha... I'm dirt poor, my school won't pay for it, but I'm ready to buy camtasia for mac the second it's released. Am I crazy? I have to say it would be SWEET if my license for pc from last fall would apply to the mac version!

Troy,
Thanks for your update. PLEASE could you clarify, with the Macamtasia release match the PC version feature for feature?
I'm paying and sitting through lots of Camtasia experts' webinars as they show each "how to' of each feature, and there's not much point of learning those if they won't be available in the Mac release. I need to know if I'mn to continue investing in other apps to manage the work arounds to get the results I need.
Thanks!

Please allow the user to assign keyboard commands to as many functions as possible. Many editing operations can be performed much quicker through keyboard commands rather than mouse clicks.

I've switched from PC to Mac, and the only, only, only, only programs I miss are Snag It and Camtasia. If only you would have those two programs (especially Snag it) that would be like Christmas Day and I'd be five again.
