24 Videos in 24 Hours About Camtasia Studio

Posted on Sunday January 25, 2009 by Betsy Weber

January 19 was American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe's 200th birthday. He was born January 19th 1809. Growing up, my father would read his stories to my sister and I right before bed. I think that might explain a lot about why I am the way I am now! No wonder I had trouble falling asleep back them. :-) Edgar Allan Poe was quoted as saying "Sleep - those little slices of death, how I loathe them." And still today, I have trouble falling asleep - I am a night owl!

Being a night owl will be useful soon. I'll be pulling an all nighter with Troy Stein, the Camtasia Studio Product Manager, various developers, trainers, and other TechSmithies. Starting on February 17, 2009 at 8:00am EST, we're going to do another 24 videos in 24 hours all about Camtasia Studio!

There will be a couple of different ways you can 'tune in'.

  • Visual Lounge Blog:
We'll be recording 5 - 10 minute videos all about Camtasia Studio every hour for 24 hours. I'll be posting them on the blog after we complete them.
  • Twitter: I'll also be live 'tweeting' it on Twitter here.
  • Ustream Live Video Stream: And, for fun, we thought we'd experiment with a live video stream on Ustream - you can tune in and watch us for the 24 hours here. I can't say the the live stream will always be riveting or interesting - especially at 4am, but you can tune in and there will be a chat room where you can talk with us.

If you'd like a reminder about the event, download an appointment for your calendar here.

These will not be formal training videos - you can find those in our Learning Center. We wanted to have fun, have you 'meet' people at TechSmith, give you some insider tips and tricks and show you how we use Camtasia Studio.

A small group of us were were brainstorming our list of topics to cover last week and we wanted to make sure we were covering topics you wanted to learn about. We saved several spots for 'Viewers Choice' videos. What are some topics you'd like us to cover? Post them in the comments below.

I hope you'll tune in and learn something new that you can do with Camtasia Studio!

I'd like to see how you can use your tools with PowerShell.

Hi:

Make it a family night... Record a standard video, process it in Camtasia Studios and then post it to Screencast.

Hi:

Great job on the new Snag It output to Screencast!

Thanks....

Pierre :

I think this is a great idea! I marked it in my calender, hope to be able to watch you record online then.

And of course no 24 hours marathon can be complete without showing how to best create a High Definition screencast for use on YouTube. ;-)

What a cool idea!!!! Can't wait to see what you have planned.

My suggestion would something like those TV shows like Extreme Home Makeovers. How about reworking some already produced videos?

I'm always interested in what other folks are doing and how we can make improvements.

Howard :

Can you go over the techniques for voice recording narration? I do the narration through Camtasia and not Powerpoint because you make it so easy, but recently I have been having troubles getting the clicks out at the end of each recording, and also been having troubles with the fade outs, I use the fade out to get the click out at the end, but they have been fading the entire track?? Can not figure this out. Thanks for the help and love the product. 5 Year user.

Don :

I'd love to see something on editing the back end XML, HTML for customization.

Also per the above on Narration. My instructors who record the videos I produce, seem to have all sorts of issues related to Microphone setup, echos, audio profiles etc.

I've been using Camtasia for many revs and 6 is much improved. The current tutorials are based on creating videos for the web. I create my training videos to go on a CD/DVD and would like to see higher resolution addressed along with creating autorun CDs. Also more tutorials on editing the audio track separate from the video. Also I would like to select a portion of a video and replace it with a corrected video without affecting the audio.

Rick :

I appreciate the How-To's, and now I'd love to see some Best Practices. Examples: "I set my fades-to-black at 1 second." "I render at 640x400 for HTML." "I use AVI Pack-and-Show at 800x600 for sending controllable, standard-free viewing internally to my co-workers and for posting on our Intranet."
Thanks,
Rick

Occasionally Camtasia gets out of synch while you're creating media-heavy videos (voice with video/animation). i've found that closing it and restarting will usually fix this, but it might be something you would want to address. This marathon is a great idea!

I need help with producing. I want to make small, web-viewable videos that can be downloaded by my customers and easily viewed even through they have weak computer skills. When I produce a video now there are so many files. I want a guid to the simplest system possible.

Peter Gysegem :

I would really like to see a tutorial about combining camera video and screen capture into a single video. I don't mean a picture from a web cam in a corner of the capture video but having an intro by a live speaker then some screen capture, then, perhaps some closing remarks in live video. I am interested in choosing the best video format and any tricks to make it work as seamlessly as possible.

I am new to Camtasia, just bought is this week. I'd love to know if/how I can be on Google Talk with my associate and be capturing my desk top to do training projects for volunteers who will be using our newly designed website. We tried and it bogs down so much that we can't get it to work correctly.

Quote floater
Mike Lougee :

Great thing to do (and sounds fun, too!).

What about allowing "call-ins" from viewers, who have questions/ideas about what you're doing during the event?

Related, what about having Camtasia users create their own 5-min-max videos (of either tips, or questions, or whatever) which they'd submit to you in advance, you'd choose the best, and you'd put those into your "playlist" during the event?

We presume that you're recording the entire "show," for reruns, yes??

Quote floater
Gayle Michel :

I would also like a demo on how to cut / replace screen capture video without affecting any of the other tracks.

Quote floater

I'd like to see a video with a compilation of "tips and tricks" such as little quick, not obvious tips for Camtasia. Like turning off the Apply Zoom-and-Pan hints, to get rid of the green zooming box. :)

Quote floater
Njo :

I'd like to see a video on erasing the recorded audio in a video and replacing it with new narration. Right now I can only find how to add additional audio.

Quote floater
Steve Kelly :

I am using Camtasia for online training video's using video, screen capture and voice-overs. I would like to see a start to finish video from Recording to Post Production to Upload to Jing or Screencast.

Also since all my work is online - tips and tricks to make it small for easy buffering and viewing

Thanks for some of the BEST applications ever written!!!

Gary :

I'd like to see how to capture a software demo, with post-capture editing of the capture, and post-capture audio voiceover. If possible, I'd also like to see hotlinks and/or rollovers - added to the capture -to external video or document references. Then, export to HTML, FLV and/or mp3/mp4 for multiple deployment options.

Quote floater
Rosemary Chacko MD :

I would like to understand how Camtasia uploads to screencast.com and gets the files in the right path. Thankfully it is automated -- but I want to put some Articulate projects up there and am having trouble doing it manually. Do I need to send the project as a zip and then unzip it within screencast.com? I don't want everyone to see or be able to download the actual project, just see the output.

Elizabeth :

Hi! Not sure if this is something you can explain during this event or not, and maybe there are others out there like me - or maybe not! I have a hard time getting my head around screen dimension, recording dimension and actual output dimension of the video. What I would like to understand is the following: I am producing a video for a software demo or training for example and I am running the software to be captured on my screen at a high resolution - say my screen resolution is 1680 x 1050 or 1440 x 900. My client's screen resolution is set to 1024 x 768 when they are viewing the recording (this is the minimum resolution for actually running the software that my company sells). The dimensions of my recordings will always be a maximum of 1024 x 768 (which is full screen for a user that has a 17 inch monitor at the minimum system requirements). The questions I have are:
1. What resolution settings should I be recording at on my screen so that I can produce a video at very good visual quality (not too small)? Do I need to reduce my resolution? If I need to reduce the resolution on my screen, I find that the image on my screen for recording is not "crisp" enough.
2. Once I've recorded, what would be the best output size to select so that it allows my clients using a 17" monitor to view the full size of my recording without having to scroll horizontally or vertically and for clients with a higher resolution - the videos won't be too small? In both cases, I want to produce videos that do not take up the full screen, but gives a crisp recording that is not too small. Clients will be viewing this over the Web.
Also, I would like to record once and be able to use the video as a stand-alone video or insert it as one of many videos inside a Camtasia Theater.
Thanks so much. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this!

Hi you all,

This question was answered by Camtasia's support staff, but I think it would be great material for a tutorial in this series!

I'm trying to customize the Template.html for ExpressShow productions found in the folder: Program Files\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio 6\Media\Studio\HTML\ExpressShow\basic

I am editing the tag and the page background CSS value. The default title tag includes teh variable $HTMLTitle Can I edit that variable somewhere?

When I produce my ExpressShow and choose SWF my edits are reflected on the html page.

But when I produce my ExpressShow and choose MP4 my edits are NOT reflected on the html page.

It seems obvious to me that the MP4 production uses a different Template.html. Which one is that? Can I edit that one?

I'm using as my guide for CS 5 tutorial at
http://video.techsmith.com/camtasia/5/edu/newfeatures/enu/expressshow/customizehtmltemplates/customizehtmltemplates.html

Will you be producing a similar tutorial for CSv6.0.1? That was a very helpful tutorial!

Thanks and Cheers,
Rich

We need MORE ... MUCH MORE ... about Quizzes. This functionality could be a LOT BETTER than it is, so at least make a video that explores ALL ASPECTS of what you have. Then, hopefully, you'll expand on this great idea MORE in future releases. To be able to quiz, then send the user an email with his or her score, would be nice, for example. Great selling tool for those of us with on-line stores.

I am working as a collaborator on an internal grant to use iTunes for delivery of video for Elementary Algebra. I produce QuickTime Movies and podcasts(this production mehtod is really slick)and will start releasing them to a few students to see how everything is working.

I will still provide streaming video using web menus for students until iTunes can replace it. It seems to be a more student-centered method for delivery. The big plus for me is that I don't have to be on campus to load content. Any tutorials for this?

Tutorial on marking up (drawing lines, arrows, boxes, etc.) the screen while editing with Camtasia.

Quote floater

I second all the comments about more info on best practices in screen resolution size and production settings.
I *Love* how Theater allows me to bundle all my videos together with one menu. I produce videos for the web as well as for CDs. I need to know if Theater is appropriate for CDs. I sure hope so! Because my bundle of videos won't fit, even on DVD, in .avi format and menumaker.
I like using Screencast.com and I know I can't use screencast-hosted videos with Theater. That's too bad - but I can live with it.
Just more info on Theater please! Like, is there a way to have it open with all collapsible menu entries defaulting to the collapsed state?
Thanks!!

I would like to see more on your transitions and the easiest way to place them exactly where they need to be.

My biggest struggle is when folks in my department shoot video, put (link) video clips onto PowerPoint pages, and then off-handedly say, "April, would you put this on the web for me." I've used Camtasia with pip to make the PPT into an mp4 with toc and controls. But ensuring that each slide is exactly the correct length to match the corresponding video clip is time consuming and tedious. If you folks have an easy way, I would love to see a training video specifically on this.

Hey great idea here for a 24 Hour Broadcast. I would like to see how to make the Behringer USB Podcast Kit work correctly for setting up audio to record. I got one from my lovely wife for X-Mas and was excited but when I try to use the audio wizrd when I start it up to automatically set voice record levels my Camtasia Stuido 6 crashes everytime. I was under the assumption that CS would automatically detect my USB Mic. I would be a real happy camper to learn how to correctly set it up. I built my own microphone sound booth to get rid of surrounding noises out of an old milk crate and used acoustical foam for deadening the background noises. Now it is just a matter of getting the Behringer USB Podcast Kit to co-operate with CS 6. I am using a Toshiba Qosmio g_35 Laptop that runs Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 with Service Pack 2 and 1.83GHz with 1Gig of RAM. Please see if you could do something on this subject and thanks in advance. A loyal TechSmith user for years.

Thanks and Can't Wait To Tune In,

Fred Grover

I would some additional information on what affects the end product file size. They vary tremendously.

Also, I would love to see tips for making the final product video as smooth and jitter free as possible.

Thank you for this most remarkable product.

Great stuff! On the high end mic video, he mentions that those mics are avaialble at on-line store, but only the Samsung one is. Can you provide a list of the other makes and models shown?
