The Future of Jing... Help!

Posted on Monday October 27, 2008 by Betsy Weber

As you know, TechSmith loves user feedback. We need it. Our products are better because of your input and feedback.

So, with that in mind, I was chatting with the Jing (and SnagIt) Product Manager, Tony Dunkel. That's him on the left. And, we were wondering, now that Jing is a little over a year old, now what?

This is where I need your help - help shape future versions of Jing to how you want them. What would you like to see in future releases? What about a Jing Pro version? What would that look like to you?

I'll get the list started. For a Jing Pro version, I'd like to see some additional features and functionality like:

  • Editable Jing video content - I'd like to do some basic editing to my jingcasts like resize them and do some editing in Camtasia Studio (trim clips, join multiple jingcasts, produce in multiple file formats).
  • Additional mark-up options for screen captures - I'd like to change the font of the text and add transparency to objects (arrows, text boxes, highlights, etc).

Now it's your turn - What would you like to see in future releases? What would Jing Pro look like to you? Comment away - We're listening...

I love your suggestions, Betsy. I have a few too..

First - I want to be able to send videos to YouTube as well as Screencast.com - just like I can send pictures to Flickr or Screencast.com

Next, I want to be able to save things locally AND to the online storage of my choices.

Third, I would like to see the history of my URLs so I can pick and choose. Mostly this comes into play when I have more than one Jing to send to the same person - I always seem to be pasting in the wrong one. (Yes, I know - I can grab it from the history, but I want it in one step - like a check box of the last 5 or 10.)

Fourth, I want to be able to add blank space around a Jing image, just like I can in SnagIt.

Fifth, I WANT SCROLLING INPUTS. I want to be able to grab a whole page when the page is longer than a single screen.

That's my top five. I know that there are others, but that's my start.

I'll second Kathy's first 2 ideas. I'm a big fan of Snagit's borders, and would like to see the ability to add either a solid border or drop shadow to a captured image. Re-sizing a captured image or video would be really nice. I suppose the ability to record longer than 5 minutes would be nice on occasion, though I personally can't recall needing longer than 5. That's all I can think of for now...

The comment I saw up the page is perfect.

I WANT SCROLLING INPUTS. I want to be able to grab a whole page when the page is longer than a single screen.

This is what I want also.

Thanks

Does Jing Pro last more than 5 minutes?

Well, before any enhancements, I would like to see the basic product work. After over 4 hours yesterday I still cannot record an audio narration. I tried all your help topics, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, tested my mics (2) on different products (they work), talked to a friend on Skype and watched him download Jing and make it work properly in about 3 min. I gave up and downloaded the free Camtasia to try that. Still no audio capture, even the sound on the tuutorials wouldn't play. My speakers are connected and test fine. My mic is connected and works fine. I can play music, talk to others, everythign except record an audio track in Jing or Camtasia. Any suggestions will be appreciated. It looks like it would be a useful tool if it would work.
