SnagIt 9... Now what?
Posted on Thursday June 26, 2008 by Betsy Weber

See Tony Dunckel? He's the SnagIt Product Manager and is pictured to the left. Next to him is "Mouseman" - one of the old logos of SnagIt. As Product Manager, Tony gets to guide SnagIt's roadmap and part of his direction comes directly from you, the SnagIt users! Many of our best feature ideas come from you. And, our products are better because of the feedback you give us.
Now with that in mind, you've had a chance to play with SnagIt for a little while. If you had Tony's job as Product Manager, what would you do next? Any features you would like added?

Tony:
You satisfied one of my major wishes in Snagit v9:
I can now embed a Snagit 9 swf file with mouseovers in an Adobe Acrobat pdf file (v9).
And for good measure, I can embed a Camtasia swf and flv file within an Acrobat v9 file.
My thanks to Brooks Andrus and your Snagit and Camtasia teams for making that happen!!
Way to go!!

1. Default library user selectable
2. Ability to create multipage PDF w/o having to jump to Acrobat
3. Better integration with scanners/cameras. I'm having the Devils own time in getting Snagit to play nice with any of the four scanners I routinely use.
And thanks for the blog and feedback requests :)

I would love to have a blur stamp similiar to the blur callout in Camtasia. I do a lot of work with customer specific screen captures and the blur stamp would make things much easier. Right now I am trying to airbrush it out so that they can see that there should be something there but protect the privacy of the information on the captures.
I love the new stuff!!!

Alli-
SnagIt has a blur tool that might do exactly what you need. It's found on the Image tab.
Here's a quick Jing video showing it in action:

I would like to see a menu capture functionality that captures only the menu and menu cascades and not everything behind the menu as well. The workaround for this is cumbersome.
A Mac version would also be nice to have.
Don't like that the default library is on my hard drive. It just takes up space unless I delete all of the images when I'm done and we store all of our images on the network.
I am not a big fan of the ribbon bars so I use the quick access bar for my basic things.

During beta testing I wasn't the happiest camper, but the changes have grown on me for sure.
I really like the multiple capture functionality that has been added. This really helps me when creating training materials.
What's missing?
1. The ability to increase and decrease captures sizes in lesser increment percentages.
2. When selecting options Draw / Outline, after selecting a color, the user must re-enter to then select Width. Repeatious. If possible, it would speed things up, at least for me, if I was able to make multiple selections from the dropdown to save keystrokes / clicks.
Other than that, it's great!

The only negative that I found so far is not being able to set defaults for the tools in the SnagIt editor (default 4 arrows at both ends of the line, color, linewidth), etc. each time I go into the editor or perform a screen capture. I would like to see the settings that I create for each tool remained constant unless I change them. This was the behavior in SnagIt 8 and I'd like to see it continued in SnagIt 9.
Otherwise as already said, a perfect 10.

I LOVE my SnagIt! I love the feature that I can keep multiple images open in SnagIt w/out having to paste the images into Word only to take another print screen once I've pieced together what I wanted...
I did find something interesting... It seems as though when I have the Scrolling Region turned on, I need to use my hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+p) basically twice to get my printscreen. I use my hotkeys, get the message to scroll over my region, but I'm not able to. I click Esc on my keyboard, use my hotkeys again, and this time I'm able to select my region. This has been consistent behavior once I started accumulating images in my SnagIt editor. I have shut my machine down since this behavior started, but this still occurs. Note: I am able to grab the Active Window w/out issues.
But, even with the extra keystrokes, I still "Love my SnagIt!" Thanks for the great new features!

I would like to be able to easily make a .png file with the background being transparent in Editor 9.
When making a word baloon, I don't want to see the white background around the outside of the balloon

SnagIt 9 is GREAT!
The only missing piece for me so far is the ability to select multiple images and send them al to Word (or another application). It seems I must select them one at a time and click the Send to Word button, and then choose the document I want.
Selecting all and sending them with one click would be great!

I think Snagit is one of the best ever products of all time.
Negatives
---------
The new version seems to lack a 'SAVE AS' (by default) which took me some time to work out how to add it in.
I also do not like the new style (ribbon?) - much prefer classic. I don't use EXCEL 2007 for same reason.
I still haven't had time to figure out how to do all the things I used to do intuitively before.
I can't figure out how to put newfangled highlighting felt-tip pen like 'thingies' around a section - they seem to have a solid background, (not transparent) and lowering transparency lowers the whole image transparency?
Confused !

Also when I try to run 9 it tells me that another version (ie 8) is running even if i have not opened it. Should I remove 8?

I can't imagine a Mac user, such as myself, who wouldn't buy SnagIt for their Mac. Nothing available will scroll capture and the stuff that does capture is rudimentary at best.
Please hurry with that Mac OS X Universal Binary version.
PS: I did use Snagit when I tried PC's and loved it, but now I'm back to Mac.
Snagit is the only thing about PC's I miss.

I have used SnagIt for many years. SnagIt is by far the best capture tool available. I use it for everything from taking quick notes to documentation.
I love the new ribbon bar. It makes all of the features easily available.
One of the most used features that I take advantage of is the call-out tool. I would find it very helpful if there was a call-out that had more than one pointing arrow. I can then use that to relate multiple objects.

I LOVE Version 9, and am tickled pink with its overall look and feel. I especially like the ability to quickly jump back to a previous capture, even if I didn't save it. A couple of things that are a little more challenging that Version 8:
1. The ability to add a 3D border
2. Speaking of border - once you add one, and save your file, it's nearly impossible to remove your border - you have to pull your image back in to crop out the border, add white space, and do it again.
3. The ability to add a transparent or solid box with your text (the old click button on version 8).
Another thing that could be simplified is the ability to blur text within an area . . . you can easily select an area and blur everything else, but the other way around takes a bit of maneuvering (and I'm only successful once every 20 times I try it . . . can't get the right combination down). :-)
Keep up the fantastic work!

The best addition that was on my earlier wish list was the ability to save previous screen captures. Not only has snagit 9 done this, but in a much easier than imagine interface. 5 Stars for this. Also a welcome surprise was that it saved all my edits as layers, so if I need to revert back to a previous screenshot and move one of my stamps, ie. an arrow, I can do that. This alone is worth the upgrade.
Improvements (Challenges)
Now that you have this amazing catalog tool automatically saving, having the ability to create new flag icons (ie. if I have captures for specific clients, would love to flag them by different client flags for example), then if I wanted to view all captures for a specific client, I could do that.
Not sure if this is a bug with my XP Pro system or not, but once in a while when I attempt to capture a photo and copy and paste into an email, the colors change to what appears as 256 or 16 color in the email. My workaround seems to be capturing in snagit, copy all, paste into MS word, then hightlight the image in MS word copy and paste into the email (Lotus Notes 6.5). Doesn't happen all the time, but noticing it more frequently. Might be occuring with other captures, but the color pallette for those images may already be at 256/16 color, so I'm not noticing it.
Still, even with this minor bug, which may just be my system, Techsmith has taken screencapturing to an unbelievable level of not just getting it done, but getting it done right and with style!
Every client I've recommended this product to has not been disappointed and is amazed at what I produce with snag it. I constantly get asked what do I use to create the captures for such documents.
A real time saver! Thank You.

SnagIt is perfect in almost every way except the price. $50 a copy !!!??? Get real. I started with a trial copy of SnagIt 8.0, but couldn't bring myself to fork over $40 for a copy. I subscribed to your newsletter, thinking that maybe one day you'd advertise a 'special', at which point I'd take the plunge. I was surprised and disappointed when you recently released SnagIt 9.0 and jacked the price up to $50. If/when you have a promotion at $30 a copy, I'll likely make a purchase, but until then, I'll keep using the trial.

I was reading a book last night, Tuned In. The authors say that businesses that become important are tuned in to what their customers want, but that that isn't enough to make acompany or organization grow because it doesn't take into account what those who aren't yet customers want or need. The authors said that businesses that become great create services and merchandise that fulfill a need that people often don't know that they want. And I think that SnagIt 9 has done just that. I was quite happy with previous SnagIts, but when I downloaded 9, I realized that previous versions hadn't offered things that I needed...and now, there they all are in SnagIt 9.

Love the product and the new enhancements, particularly being able to caputure multiple snags in one session.
I would love the ability to rotate parts of an image. For example, be able to place a stamp, and then be able to rotate just the stamp.
I would also find it useful to be able to create custom zoom levels, instead of only being able to select specific percentages. And related to this, be able to have my scroll wheel perform a dynamic zoom.
Thanks!

SnagIt 9 is incredible! I'm proud to have been a beta tester.
1. Definitely would like to be able to rotate text to match an object. We do a lot of maps via SnagIt and like to add labels parallel to street direction.
2. Stitching together multi-page snags
3. A "last used" folder retention option.
Thanks

1. I won't let up asking for a spell checker in text boxes.
2. I would like to see balloon boxes with multiple pointer that you can drag out. So many times, I would like to be able to point to several areas on an image from one text box.
3. I still haven't found where you adjust line witdh for the pencil. I'll find it.. I hope.

Hi Snagit team,
I have yet to find a screen capture profile allowing me to capture something the goes beyond the image/text that is shown on screen. There is a capture profile that scrolls vertically and one that scrolls horizontally. Where is the capture profile that scrolls BOTH vertically and horizontally? If for example the Region to Clipboard could allow me to scroll this way it would be teriffic.
Thanks,

The editor features in SnagIt 9 is a real step backwards. Putting a lot of the most used tools on different ribbons just does not work for me.
When I want to draw a rectangle, I want to choose the color and type first, now it the other way around. I know how to do it, but it just does not feel right.
I must be one of the few that does not feel like the new Microsoft Office ui is a step in the right direction, I guess.
I do like the library, that is smart, and I might get to use the tagging for something useful too. I also like that I can take many screen shots in a row, and then pick the ones I like.
Print Preview and changing page layout is buggy. Print preview does not change to landscape if I change the layout from inside the preview.
I miss better zoom control. It should always be visible, and not all the way in the lower left corner. I also want more granular zooming options. Right now it is a bit coarse, 50-100-200% I'd like 50/75/150/200% if possible. Good thinking putting zoom on ctrl+scrollwheel.
Oh, another thing, the "I'm still here" tray balloon consumed 100% cpu on my machine, but luckily it is gone.
With v8, I could not live without SnagIt, now I'm not sure anymore. I'll probably still use it, but I'll keep an eye out for competing products, with better usability for my needs.

The main way I am using 8 was to take still shots of video i would capture in a sports motion analysis program then in snag it put comments in text boxes under the still pictures. I could send you an example if you'd like. thanks. Still love your product. Jeff

#9 is really awesome. After using the previous versions for nearly 4 years, I really like the new layout and features.
Of the things I would like to see added (in order of preference)
1. Ability to rotate individual objects such as the cursor or hand pointers.
2. Text with just leaders (multiple leaders too) without a box or cloud.
3. Be able to set settings from one box if possible (lineweights, colors, shadows etc.

In Snagit 8, the editor window would disappear as soon as the green ckeck to complete the capture was clicked. I see no way to invoke the same behavior in Snagit 9. Therefore I keep both versions installed on my machine and use Snagit 8 for about 95% of my captures.
An improvement would be inclusion of the magnifier window when cropping inside the editor, just like in the original screen capture.

Snagit is a great tool for quick adoption and ease of use. Thanks for this product and for taking feedback to stay on track as it advances. I'd like to continue to recommend it to others in the future. Some comments on initial ease of use follow.
Adding features is a natural progression for these support products but the real winning advances maintain the recipe that keeps simplicity the key attribute. For quick basic usage and clear crisp visual interfaces Snagit-8 was better. Snagit-9 is moving toward a fuller feature editor tool and you are loosing some bacic GUI interface attributes.
For example the Quick Access tool bar is a visul mistake that should have never gotten past your GUI engineeers. The Redo arrows are lost in the dark grey motif.
The send tab should include the default printer as an option.
The tray is a nice feature but it needs a trash bucket for quick maintaince instead of individually deleting images. Of coarse there is probably a way to go to a file listing a select and delete a group but a better tool would make this more intuitive and easier within the main screen.
An improvement for the One-Click and also in the Output group in the SEND tab would be to offer a "To-Clip-Board-and Close" output option for faster basic usage use.
If maintaining the simplicity for users who don't have time or need to learn the features of a rich visusal capture and editing tool perhaps you should consider two distinct Window modes or if neccessary to different products.
Again thanks for your product and best wishes on your next upgrade.

Why did putting a border around the image or circling an area get so difficult? Every single time I have to rechoose the border width or width of the circle and it not simple like it was with 8. Since I use a border and circle on almost every image capture I do, this is a big deal for me.
I like some of the changes but be careful about making the product more difficult to use.

One thing I was hoping to see in the "next" release (since version 7) is the ability to add additional pointers to callouts. There are many times when I want one callout to point to two or more objects, so I have to create multiple callouts, each of which points to one object, and overlay the callouts on top of each other. I'd like to be able to capture a text window like this one with a scrolling feature when the text overfills the space of the window. There are web sites who's only option for contact is through an email with a window like this and a hidden address link. In order to document my communication in it's entirety, I've recently figured out how to use the copy function to paste it into an email addressed back to me, but maybe there would be an easier way using SnagIt. I could then have more options for what to do with the text beyond emailing it back to myself. I thought I could use "Region [Auto-scroll]", but either I didn't use it right or that's not made for this application. I haven't explored many of the functions of SnagIt 8 or 9 but I love everything I use, especially the "One Click" pull down menu. If there is a way to use SnagIt 9 as I described, I'd appreciate some feedback.

in 8.2 the one click would always stay on top, however in 9.0 this does not always happen, sometimes it gets hidden under a current web page, then one must downsize the web page to get one click to appear, anyone else having this problem ?

Choose a file name when sending a capture via email
I miss the possibility to choose a filename when I send a capture by clicking on the "E-mail" button in the Send-menu.
SnagIt 9 came out with the promise to make it easier to work with captures withoud the tedious task of saving a capture before it can be further used.
But in the simple case of sending a capture via email this doesn't work, since the attached image always gets an automatig file name and it is not possible to give the attached image a meaningful name without saving it first to disk, then renaming it, then attaching it to a new e-mail manually.
Pity.

Attach multiple captured images to an e-mail.
It would be very handy to have the possibility to attach more than just one captured image ro an e-mail.
Currently, it is only possible to attach a single image via the E-mail button in the Send menu.
This, again, makes it necessary to first save captured images and then open the E-mail client and import the images manually.

Capture a region of a given "floating" window
I often have to make screenshots of small open windows that can appear on different screen locations each time.
I then need to capture a fixed region inside of these windows.
This is a task that - to my knowledge - is not possible to do with Snagit 9.
Yes, you *can* capture a fix region, but this region is relative to the screen, not to an active window that could be placed anywhere on the screen.

I would like Snagit to be able to capture a large photo or collage of items in the editor and then be able to select or pluck out multiple captures/images and store and label each sub-image separately. This would allow a user to catalog a library of items in a collection so you could have an image ID that corresponds to each item.

I use Snag It at work and home daily. I have Ver. 9 at home on (2 computers) and Ver. 8 at work. I am waiting for approval to get upgraded at work which only requires, money, justification, and someone that knows what a valuable tool it is for getting work done quickly and efficeintly.
I would like to see many more of your tutorials. I work with them at home and am hoping by showing my management how easy the program is to use, I can get upgraded and make their work load easier.

I'm sorry to say this, but I'm extremely disappointed with Snag-It 9. Versions 7 & 8 I loved with the exception of being able to save the images while keeping the objects separate for later editing. Not flattening them when closed and opened again. However, the impossible interface and poor changeover to it has made 9 an upgrade I should have bought. The loss of the catalogue combined with a dumb categorization system that is unexpandable is one of the greatest mistakes you have made. What a half-baked bit of trash to foist on us - with no way I can see of getting back to the old interface. I had it installed for a day and gave up. I need to get my work done and v8 made that possible. I should have tried V9 before I upgraded but I had become used to TechSmith being so good that I let my usual upgrading caution drop. Such is life. However, if v10 goes even further away from the sensible design interface you will lose my upgrade to that for sure. Respect good working code. Don't break it without a really good replacement. No legacy steps for an seasoned user, comfortable with the design, sing it ALL DAY for work! What a miserable step!
Hoping your next version gives me back what 8 has, and makes the improvements like...
a- Being able to save separate objects in a file for later alterations. If a base screen capture that I have added call-outs to changes I have to edit the whole damn thing again. If I could keep the capture in a layer separate from the callouts that would be FANTASTIC.

Sorry... continuing on from my previous post ( I hit enter and sent too soon).
b - Yes, a Mac version would be really good too. I use Snag-It and Camtasia Studio on a Macbook pro with XP because I do a lot of training documentation on both platforms.
c - Multiple images open simultaneously would be very handy as well. Having to close and open each is a slow-down at times.
Can't think of any more just yet but If I do I'll let you know.
Thanks for great software to date (excluding V9) and a excellent standard of interface design. I feel very strongly about the issue because there are few programs that please me so much.

Apologies if this is off-topic -- I'm assuming all SnagIt issues are on the table...
Is there anyone out there who only wants to download a couple of SnagIt accessories? Aren't most of you like me -- you want every single available SnagIt accessory installed and ready to use?
Why isn't there a "complete install" download that installs every accessory? Thank you.
BTW, my SnagIt needs are simple, and the upgrade to 9 didn't break anything I used to do in 8. I find 9's interface easier to use than 8's, and I really like the capture history thumbnails.

The Print Preview pane is broken. When you change from Landscape to Potrait, the Print Preview remains the same. Also the view screen is off a bit on size. When selecting 100%, it should be the actual image physical size, it appears to be magnified significantly. When capturing a single page document, the .tif file has to be reduced below 50% in order to see a comparable size image displayed on the screen. 8.2 had better scale features, and easier to get to as they were on the left hand corner of the capture always.
I do like the multiple captures being easily visibile, as well as some of the other new features, which tend to outway the items not functioning correctly.
Being a consultant, it is funny, as the client tends to buy between 5-50 copies of SnagIt after they see the work I do using it...this one is 12 licenses so far!
Happy 4th!

The most important feature missing from SnagIt 9 is that it still isn't portable. If there were a version of SnagIt that I could run from a thumb drive using PortableApps (like ClipMate, RoboForm, and Edit Plus), I'd buy a second license to use on my PC at work.
Also, I miss the Classic View and would like it reinstated.

I've been using SnagIt since version 3.2 and love it, it's a must-have program. I agree with others than the new GUI is a bit hard to get used to but as with any change it takes time and us power users are a stubborn lot when we find outselves having to poke around and re-learn things. But then again, people who now have Windows XP probably complained when they first used it from Windows 3.x or NT, and now moving to Vista so don't worry about the complainers, they'll go away over time.
I'd like to see a bit more easy of use when pasting an image to Excel (or Word). I like the button that pastes the image however it always pastes images on top of each other and I have to manually move them. It should be able to adjust the insert position to be more than the height of the object being pasted. I do this manually now by selecting a cell below the newly pasted image and then going back to SnagIt to get the next image. This is ok for a few images but any more and it's unproductive.

I miss the "Copy to Clipboard" Ctrl+Shift+C option from the old Catalog Browser under snagit 8. I used to preview lots of images and then directly copy and paste them into prototypes documents.
Under snagit 9 editor, I have to open each one, select all, copy, close, etc, etc.
I had only been using Snagit 8 for a few weeks when I got the update to snagit 9. I still found snagit 8 easier to use. I can't stand all the black baground in snagit 9, as I generally work on a white desktop, and all the menu option icons are massive and I can't find a way to make them smaller.
I miss the Catalog Browser, as I used to do all my work in there. That is, a few raw captures, then get to work in the catalog. Now's it gone I'm finding it very hard to navigate through the top menus of the new editor, and to find all my work.
The main good thing for snagit 9 is being able to edit multiple images. The perfect solution would have been snagit 8 with this feature.

I've been using SnagIt for years, and have found it indispensible...until version 9. Here are my comments to a colleague after trying SnagIt 9:
"Had my first hands-on exposure to one of those 'new' interfaces (SnagIt 9) this morning. Gag me with a spoon. Much wasted screen estate, tiny almost invisible dark blue toolbar icons (the icons I would use most) on a dark gray background, huge in-your-face cluttered ribbon featuring quantities of unnecessarily large (and unresizable) icons (the icons I would use least), and a thick ugly black border."
How about an alternative, Classic UI? I don't need cosmetic distractions, I need simple usability! Every time I encounter these doodads I want to shout, "Get out of my way so I can get some work done!"
Sorry, I'm going back to 8 until (a) you come to your senses and quit trying to gild the lily, and (b) you restore the features you removed, such as adding captions after the fact. I realize it's probably more fun to add silly visuals than to make SnagIt ever easier and more versatile for us working stiffs, but I would guess we are your main customer base, and you don't want to lose us. Yet that's the slippery slope you appear to be starting down.

I would like to be able to resize the capture boundaries before the image is saved - it would help prevent me cutting the tops off of heads, like in the image at the top of this page
I know I can save the full page, and then use the editor to select a capture area, but that is two steps when one should be enough.

I like the new features that I have tried. The one thing I can't seem to find is the equivalent to "Done" in SnagIt 8 in version 9. I will create a few captures using One Click. I'd love to be able to capture mouseover tooltips. I've always assumed its Windows that makes that impossible - press a key or move your mouse and they're gone so impossibel to capture.
Meanwhile, as a SnagIt user and evangelist since version 6, and directly responsible for quite a few purchases, the comments in this blog have me torn in half over upgrading. Some of the new features would be great. but some of the apparent losses/changes convince me not to lay out any of my own money or my employer's money for version 9. How sad that makes me.

SnagIt is simply one of the best programs I have ever used. Was introduce to it through my department at work, which uses it to create user documentation, etc. They still use the old version. I purchased version 8 and then version 9. Absolutely awesome program. I have been using it during my MBA program and my Powerpoint presentations and Word papers are simply off the charts. I actually recorded a Flash video off a web site and embedded it into my PowerPoint. Lots of oohs and aahs on that one. My professors always ask me how I do it. Have no suggestions on what to add as it completely meets my needs. What I like about version 9:
- New graphics featers are very, very nice
- Like the ribbon style
- Like the editor (don't like history of images)

2. More granular zoom control.
3. Auto hide ribbon bar not just minimize.
4. Ability to park items off canvas.
5. Skins.
6. User defined data store.

9.0 needs the following:
ability to add captions at the bottom of a capture, just like 8.2
lighten up the tool bar, it is so dark one cannot see the tool icons.
need a done button, so the editor will disappear after the capture is taken and one can get back to the web page, now to get the editor to go away, you have to hit the "X" in the upper rt. corner, many times I have hit the wrong "X" and logged out of my browser.

I love the new version but I did have some things I would like to see in the next version...
1. when you "snag" something copy it to the clip board too so that I can directly paste it in a document or email if I don't need to make any edits... it does happen!
2. Auto Tagging, ability set up default tags so when you are working on a big project you do not have to tag each one.
3. option to delete them from the Library at the same time you delete them from the editor so you don't have to go back and delete them again.
Great product!!!! I don't know how I ever did any documentation prior to finding it!
Thanks

Multiple saves "GREAT" aloowing combineing and preventing lost captures by having to set up a folder and save,,,,,
in my opinion, major lost function from 8 is the ability to rapidly make a Text box transparent or with a backround a border in V8 it was 1-2-3
In 9 there are 10 distint operations and you cant edit later if you flatten. The "Effects" should at least stay droped and allow you to select any or all options in one shot and maybe a default you could set for all shadows Anthiallis etc
Really Really miss the V8 Text box and from reading the blogs far from being alone

I have been a user of SnagIt for years. I have been a purchaser of upgrades for years as well.
I do not have a creative list of new features to recommend but I continue to have an issue with video capture audio being non-existent or garbled. I do work for 2 not-for-profit organizations in which captured video is desired to be used as inserted clips on their websites. I am able to use the video capture smoothly..good functionality. The problem is after I have saved it and then play it back... video is ok but there is no sound or poor sound. In some early instances the video was grainy and with color distortion but this is greatly improved in the latest version.
Thank you for your excellent product...keep the goodness coming.

1. A command to shrink the canvas to the minimum size for the image. I sometimes need this before I copy the current image to paste into Word. Without it I can have too much white space and if I do it manually I 'may' crop my image.
2. I often trip myself up when clicking on the canvas. In my head I want to do a selection but I end up getting a text box. It's my fault but can there be better visual feedback for the currently selected tool - selection or text box.

I have used SnagIt since Version 4 I first learned about it many years ago at a Comdex in LasVegas I attended with the UCS Computer user group with APCUG (Association of Personal Computer User Groups) my first Comdex I won a drawing for a free copy of SnagIt that turned out to be only a free trial that anyone could have downloaded for free. I didn't like the promotional approach and I did not really use it much that year. It was presented at the APCUG Conference some years later and that is when I really started to get enthusiastic about it. It is now an indispensible part of my daily routine being used dozens of times a day on my 2 Terabyte System. I have reverted back to Using My Snagit version 8(.2.14) primarily because of the ease of use with the show tasks, column to simply add Captions to my screen captures and copy paste titles in Multiple saves. I e-mailed tech support a couple of weeks ago, asking for a heads up on how to do this in a simpler way in the new SnagIt 9 but as of July 5th 2008 have not heard back anything. Perhaps I will use version 9 more as I can find the time to learn it better, but for now it is a little complicated and I don't have the time for the new learning curve. SnagIt 8 is a waste of money. Probably the same is true of SnagIt 9.
I have purchased SnagIt 8, SnagIt 7, and SnagIt 6.
Today, I started with SnagIt 8 and its file properties window. Did not work at all.
I have used SnagIt 6 for years, and it has consistently worked well. Needless to say, I shutdown and did a hard boot of my desktop. Then I executed SnagIt 6.
You TechSmith folks should contact me by email. Your SnagIt product is getting worse, not better.

I think vers 8 is still the easiest version so far. Vers 9 has taken us from one click use up to 3 clicks for the same functions.
In General:
1. I can't use vers 9 until the issue of not being able to save customised colours is fixed so I'm still using vers 8 mostly. Using both versions has brought up the issue of snagIt closing. It doesn't close entirely--I always have to kill it in Windows Task Manager before I can switch versions.
2. Space!!! Personally, I'd like to be able to customise my space. I don't want 'Open Captures' visible all the time, nor 'Search Pane'. They both take up valuable editing space. Could they be just as effective as their own tabs on the ribbon? With that in mind, it'd be good to be able to customise the Ribbon as well to small icons--again, it takes up a huge amount of space.
3. Allow a wider selection of options to be added to the Quick Access Toolbar--things one uses most.

1) ability to convert from one object type to another - like a line to a arrow or a box graphic to a text box graphic
2) page setup includes and remembers the paper layout - landscape or portrait - rather than the printer dialog box controlling this.

1) Customizable or at least user-selectable skins - the harsh white on black is distracting
2) "Full screen" edit - or at least the ability to *fully* collapse the catalog bar at the bottom and the Library pane on the right - a way to turn off all the screen junk

I think the editor replacing the catelog was a cool enhancement. Enough to buy the upgrade, however I find myself using Jing more than SnagIt because it allows for ftp uploads and remembers the url in the clipboard to paste to non-supported IM's like MS-Office Communicator or pasting the url to a non-html email that some companys use. For some reason SnagIt does not remember ftp settings and it forces the need to have to enter them each time.... and even when the file makes it out to the ftp server. What was that file name again? and the default path it went to??? Having to constiantly go out using my ftp s-ware to hurt for the file url is a pain... so I just do not use it and use Jing instead.
I believe there are a number of lessons SnagIt can learn from Jing. Who knows maybe SnapIt 10 will get the FTP thing right. -R-

Great job, lots of new stuff, it was a bit cumbersome to get used to though.
Improvements? I would like to have a setting that would allow me to have the snagit editor minimize or close when I select the copy all button.
Also, the boarders are a bit harder to get to than they were in the past. Three mouse clicks rather than one.
I am still learning the ropes. I love the ability to keep a log of all captures, that function alone was worth the upgrade (in my case the maintenance fee). Keep up the good work

When is the French version of SnagIt 9 due for release ? Before the August 12 deadline for updating at a preferred rate, I hope...

Snagit can't work on my cpu, the JPG extension is really too bad, I mainly use the .GIF, so please help the jpg format :p, Alain, c'est un avis personnel mais crois tu vraiment que la version Française ou Russe apporterait une solution/ ou amélioration a un produit ?

1. A red X to cancel a capture.
2. Simplicity
The original advantage of Snag-It was it's simplicity...soooo easy to use. You've done a pretty good job of getting rid of the simplicity. Thanks.

Some way to resize the captured image to a predefined percent (i.e. 75%) in a single click (or two like classic snagit)

My most frequent use is simply printing a screen capture to a physical printer for reference. I would like to see more functionality, or better help file if I have missed it, on setting up a default print setting.
- Set up a default that is not changed if one changes an individual print output
- Include an auto rotate option, like Adobe Reader, along with the current options.
I also agree with the simplicity posts. Spending time learning where things are set or changed takes away from the benefit of a tool. Maybe a better help file is an option. "print" doesn't even show in the help index.

In SnagIt Editor, you can save over the original without any warning. I'd like to be offered a preference similar to Adobe PhotoShop Elements where "On First Save" you can choose Always Ask, Ask If Original (default choice), and Save Over Current File.

Whenever I resize an image to make it smaller, it gets blurry. If you can do something to fix this, that would be great! I create a lot of how-to manuals and need to be able to fit many images on one page. I would like to be able to resize it to at least 50% without it getting fuzzy. (I tried using the Sharpen effect, but it doesn't help.) Thanks.

Missing is an easy way to capture a pause frame on a DVD movie (like from PBS shows I copy for my wife to make the DVD label look cool). I upgraded to Version-9 for this feature but it seems that only every 10th or 20th capture works and the rest are black. I thought the Direct-X capture was automatic on Version 9.
Your FAQ solution is counter-intuitive, lengthy and certainly not very convenient. Perhaps a patch update would do the trick?

Hi Team, Unbelievabe comes to mind WHAT a difference! Snag-It 9 is brilliant. I like the ability to annotate, arrows etc, and wondered if one can import an image into the capture through the edit manager. I'll soon know, when I get a bit more time.
I've used to copy some of my e-book web-pages into a folder on the PC, which let's me flick back and forward without the browser.

I love SnagIt9, but was dismayed when I saved captures to a file, then deleted what I thought was just the capture in SnagIt. All my saved files were deleted, too!
I want to be able to save to a separate file (like payment confirmations), but be able to delete it from the SnagIt Editor.

I find it hard to figure out how to save an image--If I click on the icon for a diskette, I eventually get a save dialog box, but there's no pull-down menu I can find intuitively. Maybe it's right there in front of me, but I'm not seeing it.

The next version of SnagIt definitely needs OCR. I've been using it since version whatever (which came on a 3.25" floppy) and have upgraded most times since. Although the other features are such that I couldn't do without it, I'm finding that not having OCR is becoming more and more of a problem. Please incorporate it ASAP.

I'd like to be able to embed one image into another and re-size it on the fly. Then I could re-capture the whole as a single image.

I love the SnagIt product. Great job!
I would like to see the text alignment in a callout box improved in a future version. When left justifying the text, it is a little too close to the border and sometimes difficult to read. It would be great to be able to set the margins within a callout box.
Keep up the great work!

I have no desire to save the vast majority of captures to Snagit. Yet deleting the capture also sends it to the recycle bin from wherever (desktop or folder) it has been saved. Have to retrieve it from the recycle bin each time. I;m reverting to v. 8.2 until this gets fixed.
also the teensy size of the undo, redo, print, save, etc buttons is difficult and the black interface only makes it worse.

The SnagIt editor is great for captured images, since that is it's main function. However, I have also been using it to make easy, good looking mock-up screens from scratch. Normally this would be done in another program (PowerPoint, PhotoShop, etc), but I find the SnagIt editor to be cleaner looking with less effort. The only thing I would REALLY like is a way to see the layers I have. A previous commenter mentioned that PS has this, but if there was the option in SnagIt it would be nicer. A grid function would be nice too, even for making changes in captured images.
It sounds like you already keep track of call-outs in a layer format. Could you keep all drawings as layers and make a list of those layers available to users that want to see them? Ends up that if an item is covered by another item (call-outs, arrows, boxes, etc) then the covered item is lost until I figure out where it is and how to uncover it. Usually it's easier to just draw a new item, when all I really want to do is "Bring to front" via a layer.
Maybe layers are already in SnagIt 9, but I haven't found them if they are.

One thing I would still like to see happen is more control over the hotspots. You can add an image, but you can't control where that image pops up. Be able to resize that image on that screen, etc. I think in the earlier version I had the option to lighten the shape for the hotspot, so virtually it wasn't seen until I put my cursor over it. I just started playing with the new version so I may be missing something. It was just the first thing I wanted to try in this version.

I am still getting used to the new bloated interface in 9 myself - but I do like the product as a whole. Price did go up though - ouch. I wish we can still buy the cheaper older version.
One thing our accounting department complained about is the new "ability" of seeing old captures in a row - but not being able to choose how many captures to keep - more important and an option to not having a history at all - they don't want private information being retained.

SnagIt 9.0 is not intuitively simple to use. I am a long-time SnagIt user, but it seems each version adds more complexity. SnagIt 9.0 is probably great for the high-end user who makes daily screen captures, but not for the occasional user. I am considering going back to 8.0.

Love SnagIt.
The search pane is a pain. I want to be able to hide it because I don't use it and now it's anchored in the middle of the screen and I can't get rid of it.
I also want to be able to drop the 'Open Captures' section down so I have more space to work with then pull it up when I need it. On a laptop screen, Open Captures takes up valueable real estate and makes it hard to get around.
I want to be able to create a 'profile' it defaults to the things I like best - font, shapes etc so I don't have to reset each time I restart. Maybe that's in there and I just don't know it. Harder to get around some of the menus now..

So far I have two questions :

2. to save the images in word doc or powerpoint doesn't work properly for me or I need more info/training to gett it right but not info enough given.
Thanks a lot in advance

I like the improvements with the snagit 9.1 update, but there are a couple of things I'd still like to see:
1. most important: the ability to rotate parts of an image - like stamps or imported clipart that is dragged to an image
2. ability to choose a background colour for the text box
3. callouts with multiple arrow heads/pointers
Thanks!

SnagIt 9 is woefully slow, taking far too many system resources. I find text editing awkward (with a palette that appears and disappears).
I love snagit 8. It's indispensable. I use it every day.
After 4-6 weeks with version 9, I had to roll back to 8. Now I'm happy again! I do not recommend SnagIt 9 to my colleagues at work.
I suggest that TechSmith take a page from 37signals' playbook and dare to make the product simple and lightweight (i.e. go back to version 8 and make incremental improvements to that). I think it could be great for your business.

I can't believe if you delete a saved capture from the editor, it deletes the file on your hard drive. Please fix this. I want to be able to clear the editor and have 0 captures in there if i want and still have the saved capture on my hard drive. I don't want the captures in the editor to be linked to my hard drive.

I love SnagIT with one exception no 3D border in the editor i can set up a Capture profile to do it but i would like to have this feature back in there.
Also love the library but when when you go move pictures or computers the "Snags" that you have taken and saved as files are lost. need to have a way to "specify image location" to fix missing captures.

Sharepoing would be aswesome, I use sharepoint frequetly and having to capture to file just to upload to Sharepoint is just 2 extra steps that are a HUGE waste of time.

I'd like to use the timer feature, but append the captured region to a file, rather that saving each captured region to its own file. Is this possible?
