TechSmith User-to-User Forum Change?
Posted on Friday June 22, 2007 by Betsy Weber

I was looking at our User Forums the other day and the topics seemed a little confusing to me. We have a 'Basic' and 'Advanced' Forum for each product. I mean, what constitutes a 'basic' question versus an 'advanced' one? What's the difference anyway?
So, how would you feel if we changed up of the forums a little? For each product have something like this:
- Questions and Answers
- Tips, Tricks and Techniques
- Feature Requests
- Gallery (a place to show off your cool projects and work)
On a side note, if you need tech support, visit Tech Support's site here. Tech Support does not monitor the forums at this time...
Thoughts? Other ideas?

I think it is a much better idea than what the forum currently uses which is basically meaningless. How about breaking it down further?
- Audio/Voice Issues
- Flash and Components (I think this is a keeper)
- Style Techniques
- Production Settings
- PiP Questions and Answers
- Installation Issues
- Equipment Compatibility
- CS Recorder Techniques
- PowerPoint Issues
- Exporting to various media
- Quality Issues & Settings
- CS Compatibility Questions
I could probably go on...Or maybe these could be sub-categories that can be chosen from 3 or 4 main categories.

I say do it -- simple is better.

I think the fewer the topics the better. It would discourage multiple cross-postings. I like Betsy's topic settings the best. In the meantime - could I get a promotion from "junior" to at least a "young-senior"?? I have been on the board since 2001 and that's too long to take to graduate.

Wow seems like a year ago I wanted to accomplish the same thing. Glad to see the wheels turn even if they turn slow.

Good list; I wrestle with this all the time. Probably easier to show the work site I moderate (URL above) and perhaps elements of that be of interest.
ASK: General questions is a place to start for users not sure where it belongs. Then later I move them into appropriate areas as needed.
Next project is sticky FAQ / Tips in *each* section instead of one dogpile in LEARN.

That strikes me as waaaay too big a list. As a beginner, I'd probably throw my hands up in the air and give up. Bear in mind that it's human nature to do nothing in the face of an overwhelming number of choices. If you're going to do something like that, you have to have some sort of "Newbie questions here" forum for people who don't know what category their problems fall under.

Looks like you have post something like 1000 posts to get upgraded to "Senior". Considering the guy who, literally, wrote the book is ranked as a "junior" member, I'd think the #posts or time req'd to get moved up to "senior" needs some adjusting.

Hi Richard - I can look into changing the ranking system. Not sure if I can change it myself or if I need someone on our web staff to do it. Great idea...
