Screencast of the Week - PowerPoint Extreme Makeover
Posted on Monday May 28, 2007 by Betsy Weber
Last week's Camtasia Studio Screencast of the Week is a day late - my apologies. I was at Lake Michigan this weekend for some forced family fun (OK, it wasn't forced). While it was beautiful and relaxing, our lodging had no wifi.
This week's Screencast of the Week is from Dean Shareski. It's all about using PowerPoint or Keynote as a storytelling tool. People probably won't remember your bullets and slides, but there is a good chance they'll remember stories! I also like the screencast's use of Camtasia's Picture in Picture feature. The video runs about 20 minutes so get comfortable.
Any nominations for the next Screen of the Week?

Sorry about that - it showed in the preview fine. I've updated the HTML.
It should now play in the post.

Somebody should (not me of course) send this guy a copy of Using PowerPoint 2002 Special Edition by Que. and make sure he studies Part VII (Chapters 22-27 From Concept to Delivery by Tom Mucciolo) Before he is allowed to Teach on this subject anymore. Camtasia's PIP was wasted on his 20 minutes of swinging in his chair. Very unnecessary adding nothing to the overall presentation. That many Umms and Uhh's and such things show a complete lack of preparation and I found it largely distracting. His message was far to long for the amount of material he had to provide. Simple research would have presented him with the fact that Microsoft didn't 'create' Power Point, they Bought ForeThought and changed it's name to PP. If the Minds at Microsoft would actually Create their own Presentation package it would be Far and away greater than that old Forethought product they call PowerPoint. Resources should have at least included Presenters University (Do yourselves a good favor and sign up its great) I always use the Templates and I Edit the Master Slides and design my own around that which already exists, so Don't do what he says and Dump the Slides!! Understand that those are simply there for you to rework and redesign to suit your needs. His opinion of Bullet points is ridiculous. During this 20 minute Screen of the Week Extreme (hardly) Makeover, I kept wondering if this was a Gag TechSmith is pulling on us. I mean this is a Joke right? "Screen of the Week?" It's the wrong guy, the wrong way, with the Wrong Information! It doesn't get any worse than this! He contridicts himself, at least doesn't abide by his own chatter. Personally I can't understand Why it is on your site. Unless of course it is a Gag.
Well that's my review on the Gag of the Week.

In my comments I said Don't do what he says and "Dump the Slides" I should have said 'Don't Do what he says and "Dump the Templates" And for new Users... I tell them to GO NUTTS with all the wizbang stuff they can pull out of PowerPoint, get it out of their system early on. They will settle down to a more subtle presentation where the Flash is replaced with content. Explore, Experiment have fun mess around, then when you get past all that stuff, you'll have a more 'mature' Presentation. Don't go Public with the Wizbang wild stuff work it out on Practice nonsense to find out what is available. So I don't agree with anything he has to say. So it must be a Joke! The punch line!!? 'You could have spent that 20 minutes working on Camtasia Studio Instead Dave!! but you fell for our Screen of the Week Gag!"
I like your site I'm going to 'Explore More!!'

Hi Dave - Thanks for the feedback. Sorry you didn't like the Screencast of the Week.
On the plus side, it's a new week so I'm looking for a new screencast to show off. Do you have any screencasts about how you use PowerPoint or your presentation tips?
I'm open to any suggestions for the next Screencast of the Week. Post it here or email me - b.weber@techsmith.com
