TechSmith User Forums are on the move..
Posted on Tuesday January 16, 2007 by Betsy Weber

For those of you that frequent the TechSmith User Forums, I wanted to let you know that we're getting ready to update our forums. The forums will be down while we're revamping and updating them.
In the interim, please feel free to visit our other resources like the Newsletters, Learning Center, Support Center, and of course, the Blog.
Sorry to cause any inconvenience. We'll be back soon with a new fresh look and better functionality. Maybe the forums will even have that new car smell! Stay tuned!

I'm hoping the new forum will be set up to block all that porn spam? It was taking over!

That's one of the reasons why we're moving to a nice new system. :-)
And, it should be more user friendly with better features.
Thanks for sticking with us...

Any estimate as to when the new forum will be available?

I bet they don't come back and this is just a test to see how many people complain that they went away. Just doesn't seem like a company such as TechSmith would just remove one thing without having its replacement in place. How many other professional companies would do that? On the other hand if they want to remove them all together and no one makes a stink about it...then they do what they just did.

This is the same blog that promised a video of the Vlog It session way back in August 06 and that never happened.

TechSmith got user input in the forums before starting this change. I'm sure they will be back, you just need to be patient.
I've done a forum changeout before, and with the large forums TechSmith has, it could take a day or two just to have the database transfer over. Beyond that, everything has to be reconfigured in the new software. User accounts have to be modified so they have the same access. There are some things that can be done up-front such as creating a style or skin to match the rest of the website, but a lot of things just take time. The larger the forum, the longer it takes.
In the end, we'll have better forums that aren't plagued with spam. It will be worth the wait!

They are coming back...I believe the new server is in and they're testing different forum systems internally. I'll see if I can get an estimate on a date.
The forums were plagued with spammed. The system we were using was lacking features people wanted. Overall, they were not a great experience.
So, in the interest of improvement, we're changing to a better system. They will be back...I hope you will frequent them.

PS User - You're right. I forgot to post the Vlog session. Let me check with Kelly Rush, our video guru, to see what the status is on it. We recorded two sessions. Last I knew, the first session had technical difficulties with the recording. The second session might be available. I'll find out.

I don't know if I'd call him a guru, shooting 50% usually isn't the qualification of a guru.

Everyone's a critic. :)
Yeah, the Vlog It session was extremely long, longer than the length of a standard MiniDV tape, so I had to come up with a different solution, which ended up being hooking the DV Cam directly into a laptop computer via firewire and capturing the stream directly to a WMV file. Unfortunately, during the first go round, something happened with Windows Media Encoder, and it encoded the capture at 320 x 240 at 15fps, which isn't acceptable for live video. During the second session, I double-checked all the settings and was able to capture at a much more acceptable 720 x 480 at 30fps.

Well for what it's worth, which this post was actually about, the forums are back. Betsy, you can't help that the Vlog session didn't get recorded right. Kelly, I wouldn't worry to much either. The user is just a "user" and has no creditabilty since they didn't even leave a name.

What's the link for the forums? I'm still getting the message that they are being worked on when going there from the menu.

The forums are still being worked on. We are really close. We're finishing testing, migrating data and accounts, etc.
The forums will be located at: http://forums.techsmith.com
Thanks for your patience. I'll post on the blog when they're back up...
