Video #26 and #27 - Table of Contents and Smoother Demos

Posted on Wednesday November 1, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Today you get two videos for the price of one!

First up, Video #26 is about adding horizontal navigation Table of Contents (TOC) to your videos. Troy created some sample nav bars that you can have. Download them in a zip file here along with a screenshot of the nav bars in this zip file.

Click the screenshot below to watch the video. It's a longer one that runs about 15:22.

Video #27 in our series is about doing smoother software demos in one take. I was talking to Troy and he mentioned how he's learned a lot creating these videos in our 30 days series. So, he wanted to share what he's learned with you. He's learned to do a minimal amount of scripting before the demo and that helps him to do fewer "take 2s".

You'll see how Troy uses PowerPoint for his storyboarding and records PowerPoint and the software demo in one fell-swoop.

Click the screenshot below to watch the video. It runs 6:40 mintues.

Meet-up at Ad:Tech New York or T+L in Dallas

Posted on Thursday November 2, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I have the honor of speaking at Ad:Tech in New York City next week on this fab panel about blogs, podcasting (for me screencasting) and wikis.

The panel has a great line-up of people like Scott Wilder from Intuit, Martin Green at CNET, Michelle Adams from Frito Lay, and Ross Ozer at Fidelity. It's an honor to share the stage with them and I know I will learn a lot.

So, if you're in town and want to meet up, drop me a line - 517.410.0030.

Rich Boys, the Camtasia Studio Associate Product Manager, will be at T+L next week in Dallas. If you'd like to meet-up with Rich, drop him an e-mail or leave a comment.

Hope to see you on the road!

Video 29 is with Dave O'Rourke, the lead Camtasia Studio developer, and Troy Stein, the Product Manager. They'll go over all that is fixed and new with Camtasia Studio v4. It's a longer one that runs over 25 minutes. There are a few funny moments in the video too.

Video #30 of 30...Creating custom Flash Preloaders

Posted on Tuesday November 7, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Phew. We made it. Here is video 30 in our series. We didn't quite make the 30 videos in 30 days. Sorry about that.

I hope you've enjoyed the series. We've learned a lot from this experience too.

Jeff left a comment on this post asking for advice and why didn't make our target of 30 videos in 30 days. There were a couple of things that we had difficulty with. For one thing, when I was traveling, sometimes I had problems uploading and posting to the blog remotely.

Also, we started this series about two weeks before we launched Camtasia Studio 4. We did this so we could show you some of the new features before we released Camtasia Studio 4. All the additional activities surrounding the product launch cut into the video creation time also making us late on some of the videos.

That being said, should we do something like this series again? What else would you like to see?

Click here to watch the final video.

This video is about how to create a custom Flash preloader. If you'd like to add your own logo or text to the preloader that plays while your Flash video loads, this is the tutorial for you!

We need your help for the next release of Camtasia Studio

Posted on Thursday November 9, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Now that Camtasia Studio v4 is out, it is time to start thinking about the next release.

So, if you were the Product Manager, what would add or change in Camtasia Studio for the next release? Any features you'd like added?

Also, there's an old saying in the world of video: "keep going, we'll fix it in post-production." Most problems can be edited out later.

There's another philosophy which is, don't edit, simply re-record.

So, as it relates to Camtasia Studio, do you re-record or "fix it in post"? And why? What new features or changes would you like to see for the next release?

We're always looking for ways to improve Camtasia Studio so any input you can provide would be really helpful.

UPDATE: We have a handy survey if you'd like to give us your input: http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB225UPJYMN2Z

Video #31 of 30 - Bonus Camtasia Video. Hack your Table of Contents

Posted on Thursday November 9, 2006 by Betsy Weber

We had so much fun with the 30 videos in 30 days series, that we couldn't stop. So, you get a bonus video!

In video #31, Brooks Andrus, our Senior Flash Developer will show you a hack about how to add a static image above your table of contents with your Flash output in Camtasia Studio v4. Keep in mind that since this is a hack, the feature hasn't been through QA.

Watch the video and try it yourself. Click the screenshot below to launch the video. The video runs just over 7 minutes.

Screencasts of the week plus meet-up at Autodesk University

Posted on Saturday November 11, 2006 by Betsy Weber

In a past life, I designed jewelry on a CAD based system. I loved working on the computer to design the jewelry. It was thrilling to see the piece of jewelry go from a design on the computer to a wearable piece of art. I miss working on CAD sometimes. I've been chatting with Shaan Hurley over at Autodesk lately and he's been telling me all about the cool ways they've been using Camtasia Studio at Autodesk lately.

Unfortunately with our 30 videos in 30 days series, the 'Screencast of the Week' went on hiatus. It's time for me to get that going again. So, with that in mind, here are some great CAD screencasts.

I love Autodesk's 'Ask Amy' screencasts. I think we need to have something like this for our products, don't you? You'd use them, right? Click the screenshot below to view them.

Autodesk also used Camtasia videos in the launch of a new product, Impression. Click here to see a Camtasia screencast for Impression.

Also, check out Lynn Allen's amazing AutoCAD Tips and Tricks screencast here. It is one of the best screencasts I've seen lately - really high quality.

Have you seen any great screencasts you'd like to nominate as the 'Screencast of the Week?

Also, I'll be attending Autodesk University in Las Vegas November 28 - December 1. So, if you're attending the event or are in the area and want to meet-up, drop me an e-mail or give me a call on my cell, 517.410.0030. Click the screenshot below if you'd like more info on Autodesk University.

Make the world a better place and celebrate World Usability Day

Posted on Monday November 13, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Ever thought, "Why doesn't this work?" or "How do I make this easier?" Then, celebrate World Usability Day (WUD) with the Usability Professionals Association (UPA) tomorrow. It's all about promoting and raising the awareness of usability. Your participation will help make things better. And, you don't have to be a usability professional to participate.

There are events going on all over the world. To find a local event, please visit here. If you're not near a local event, it looks like there are several events online here.

At TechSmith, we will be celebrating World Usability Day! The whole Morae team and I will be attending the Michigan World Usability Day event at Michigan State University. If you're going, drop me a line (517.410.0030) and we'll meet up. I'll post pics from the event here on Flickr.

We are a proud sponsor of World Usability Day and provided the t-shirts for the events worldwide. If you get a WUD t-shirt, it would really make my day if you'd send us a pic wearing the t-shirt. Please e-mail it to me and we'll post it here.

Happy WUD!

Fun with del.icio.us and TechSmith tags...

Posted on Tuesday November 14, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I'm a big fan of del.icio.us as you probably already know. I like being able to access favorite links on any computer and sharing them with others.

I was happy when our Senior Flash Developer, Brooks Andrus, told me about a nifty little feature in del.icio.us. You can search by tags!

You can see what other people are saving and tagging for our products. This is a great way to find tutorials, tips and tricks and other useful content that others have saved.

Here are links for the TechSmith family...

Some other interesting tags:

At TechSmith, we've been saving links for you. You can see them at: http://del.icio.us/techsmith

And, if you find something that we should share with everyone, please e-mail the URL to us and we'll get it added to our del.icio.us library.

Tell the Camtasia Studio Product Manager what's on your mind...

Posted on Thursday November 16, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Tomorrow I thought we'd continue our experiment with the Skype chat room. So, join us from 1:30 - 2:30pm EST.

Here's your chance to tell Troy Stein, the Camtasia Studio Product Manager, what you'd like to see in the future releases of Camtasia Studio. Brooks Andrus, our Senior Flash Developer will be in there too. A.J. Morris from Tech Support might be available depending on how busy it is in Tech Support.

We'd love to answer any questions you have about Camtasia Studio as well as hear your feedback.

I believe you'll need the Skype 3.0 beta to use this new feature. You can download it here.

My Skype name is betsyweber so if you're having problems accessing the room, Skype me!

Click the 'Join Now' link in the pic below. Hope to chat with you soon!

Camtasia Screencasts of the Week and Meet-up in Toronto...

Posted on Friday November 17, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Your lucky day - I couldn't decide which videos I liked better, so this week you get multiple 'Screencasts of the Week'.

Today's Screencasts of the Week come from two of my fave people, Tom Green and Jim Babbage. They both contribute to CommunityMX which is a great resource if you use Dreamweaver, ColdFusion, Flash, Fireworks or Freehand.

Up first is Jim's video. He put together a tutorial for creating a digital photo frame in Photoshop. Jim demo'd the tutorial live in one of his labs and was asked by several student if it was included in their hand-out. So, he made a Camtaisa Studio for them. Jim told me that the tutorial is based on a tutorial from Scott Kelby's book, 'Photoshop CS2 for Digital Photographers'.

I like the video because Jim also took advantage of some new features in Camtasia Studio 4 - not only did he make the video, but he also made a MP3 and iPod version.

Click here to watch Jim's video.

You can read more about Jim here. I love Jim's motto,"Walk softly and wear a loud shirt."

Up next are some videos from all around nice guy, Tom Green (see his pic below from Flash in the Can). Tom teaches interactive multimedia at Humber College. I often see him speaking at Flash shows and he's written several great books on Flash.

I was e-mailing Jim and Tom, and I mentioned I that I was that I was going to blog Jim's video. Tom replied back that he could "Out Camtasia" Jim with his eyes closed! Those are fighting words!

Tom sent me some great videos too. Even I might be able to use Flash after watching Tom's videos. He makes it seem easy!

Check out Tom's videos:

What do Jim and Tom have in common outside of CommunityMX? They're both located in the Toronto area! I'll be up in Toronto next week visiting them and watching the LabRats shoot some new episodes. If you'd like to meet up in Toronto next week, let me know. I'll be in town Monday through Thursday. Please don't make me go to the Hockey Hall of Fame alone - drop me a line (517.410.0030 - cell)

Why storyboard your screencasts?

Posted on Tuesday November 21, 2006 by Betsy Weber

When planning our screencasts and videos, we'll often storyboard them out. Our storyboards are simply a rough sketch of what we want to cover in the screencast and the content we want to talk about. Our better videos happen when we pre-plan them out. Go figure. Storyboarding helps us organize the content of the video and makes sure we cover all topics we need to incorporate in the video.

For example, here's a pic of the storyboard used in a recent video Kelly Rush made about UserVue.

You can see the video created from the storyboard here. The part from the storyboard is at about 2m:33s into the video (almost the end).

I recently found these storyboard pads of paper at Levenger that I thought some of you might be interested in as well. They're nice to use when planning your screencasts.

Or, if you'd like a free template for a storyboard, download a copy of the ones we use internally here and here.

What have you found useful when planning for your videos?

'Tis the season to be thankful...

Posted on Thursday November 23, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Today we're celebrating Thanksgiving in the United States. It's that time of year to reflect on what you're thankful for, although this really should be done everyday...

I asked around the office about what people were thankful for and got a wide range of responses. Here are a few things I heard:

And, we are all in agreement at TechSmith. We're thankful for you! Thank you for using our products and continually giving us feedback. Our products are better because of you. Thank you!

In honor of Autodesk University, this week's screencast of the week is from Robin Capper!

Every year Shaan Hurley's team at Autodesk offers a full paid 'scholoarship' to attend Autodesk University. Robin Capper was one of the winners with this great Camtasia video! He designs a paper aircraft in AutoCAD. And, his video is very creative and funny!

You can read more about Robin's video on his blog here. I'll be on the look out for Robin at Autodesk University next week.

Are you going to Autodesk University? Let's meet up in Las Vegas! Call me on my cell - 517.410.0030.

And, now a word about Evangelism...

Posted on Monday November 27, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I've said it before, I'll say it again...I love our users, our products, TechSmith and my job! I feel very lucky to have a job where I enjoy going to work everyday...

We're ready to expand our department more! This is where you come in...

We have a newly created position to join our team - Special Market Liaison. You can find out about the position here.

How did I started in evangelism? I started as the Product Manager for Camtasia at TechSmith which I loved doing - I got to work with our users and all different departments at TechSmith. In 2003, we all read the book, the Tipping Point at TechSmith. From there, I decided it was something I wanted to do full time and thankfully the President of TechSmith, Bill Hamilton, allowed me to do create a new position. I was the first person with the evangelist title at TechSmith and I've been doing it for the last three years. My job is based on two books, the Tipping Point and Creating Customer Evangelists These two books changed my life and I cannot live without them! I highly recommend them for everyone!

You may be wondering what kind of activities does this role do?

You'll need to do just as much (if not more) listening as talking. I attend several conferences and events a year to get feedback and talk with our users. I speak at shows, work in the booth, coordinate meet-ups with users, etc. And, I make sure the user's voice is heard at TechSmith.

I'm an evangelist for our evangelists! I spread the word about them online and offline - at tradeshows, on the blog and our website, and internally at TechSmith.

Get ready to write! You'll be doing lots of e-mail and writing in general!

There is no typical day. Everyday is different. I love that!

You'll be doing all these things and more. Read about the position here.

You're either suited for it or not. I usually tell people, it's not a job, it's a way of life! You gotta have passion and believe in our products, the people who use them and TechSmith. If you don't, who will?

If you think, "I can do that!", I want to hear from you! E-mail me! Or, if you know someone who you think would be a good fit, would you forward this to them?

Trying to record on Vista with Camtasia Studio?

Posted on Thursday November 30, 2006 by Betsy Weber

We've been hearing from more and more people trying to record Vista with Camtasia Studio. Even today while walking around the Expo Hall at Autodesk University, I heard from someone trying to use Camtasia Studio to record while running on Vista.

We set up a MSN Group here with instructions about how to record on Vista with Camtasia Studio. Also, you can download a beta of Camtasia Studio v4.0.1 which will help in your recordings.

There is this helpful video from our 30 videso in 30 days series about recording on Vista with Camtasia Studio.

And, as always, we're looking for your feedback! If you'd like to be a beta tester and help, we'd love to hear from you too. E-mail me if you'd like to beta test.
