Welcome UserVue
Posted on Monday September 25, 2006 by Betsy Weber

We're having a party at TechSmith today. Why? UserVue has launched! You may be wondering, 'What is UserVue?' It's a Web-based service that enables you to connect remotely with your customers in their natural environment (like their office or home), using their own computers, to conduct research on desktop applications and Web sites. Also, you can have several observers watch the customer's live interaction and listen to what she says in real time.
Shane Lovellette, the UserVue Product Manager, sat down and gave me a quick demo of UserVue too. Click the screenshot below to watch. In about 12 minutes, you'll know everything you wanted to know...
If you don't feel like watching a video, you can find out more about UserVue here. What questions do you have? Post them here and we'll get them answered...

I really think this could be a cool tool, however, I get confused when I don't actually get to see it. I know that Shane talked about UserVue, but it would have been nice to see him filling out everything and it running instead of just watching the two of you. Other than that, I like the product!

Cool titling sequence, Betsy. What application did you use?

Hi Betsy,
Good overview and a great product. I can think of several very high end internet marketers I know that will love to get this kind of testing data for their sites!
Too bad it was just a video of you and Shane chatting...
If only there was a piece of software that could have recorded the actual screen and shown exactly what Shane was talking about as he demonstrated the product...

Sounds like a great set of features product, and the price is right! Also, I love that you're providing a free seven-day trial - that could go a long way toward convincing my bosses to sign up for this service.
I'll join the chorus in saying that this demo video was not very helpful. Any chance you could provide an actual video that UserVue produces?

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the lack of screen video. I'm going to try to track it down right now, and if I can find it, I'll splice it in, which will hopefully help to put the pieces together! :)

I was just wondering what kind of sound equipment you used to record this session?
I have been looking for a good solution to recording several people in a converstation.
The sound in this video is just amazing compared to others that I have heard. Great Work!

Hey Matt,
I used a wireless microphone setup to capture Betsy and Shane's voice, and then fed that directly into the camera as it recorded. I don't have access to the microphone right now, but I'll take a look when I'm in and see what the exact model is.

Hey Matt,
Ok, the wireless microphone is made by "Azden", and the model number on it is "200UPR". It consists of a wireless receiver unit (with XLR and 1/8" stereo outputs), as well as two wireless transmitters and (I believe) two lapel mics. I've hooked them up to the camera to record, and I've also used them as inputs going into a laptop to record audio that way, and it's always sounded really nice.
Hope that helps!
