Video #2 of 30 - Vista Videos with Camtasia Studio

Posted on Tuesday September 26, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I've seen some great videos made with Camtasia showing off Vista like this one and this one.

Wondering how to best make your own videos of Vista? Troy Stein has made a video doing just that. Check out today's video by clicking on the screenshot below.

Two down, 28 videos to go!

Crestfallen that Vista is the subject of video #2. Look, given the apparent depth of your product, I'm guessing that there are far more fundamental use cases than an OS that, in reality, almost nobody is using day-to-day. I could see this being video #29 of 30, but #2? Get with it.

Hi Steven,

Sorry you didn't like this one. We have been getting a lot of questions about recording Vista so we thought a quick screencast would be good to show others how to do it.

What would you like to see instead?

Hopefully you'll like tomorrow's video better...

Troy, nice videos. How did you get the bottom green navigation bar? Is that a new feature in version 4 of Theater that I missed?

Troy Stein :

Hi Richard,

great question. The lower navigation was just made by adding callouts and hotspots. Nothing new.

At the end of the series, I'll make a video explaining how I made them because there were a few tricks I used to "expand the canvas" of the video to make room for the navigation.

Really?

How about: how to record a window in Camtasia and get decent output without using Flash? I don't see a way. I've tried, and have pretty much given up. I can't find resources on your website that answer ostensibly basic questions like this, and I had high hopes for this 30-video series.

I'm guessing, looking at video 3, that you're more into fawning Microsoft and pleasing third party providers than really helping your customers. I could be wrong, but it sure smells like it.

Hi Steven,

I'm guessing by the tone of your post that your pretty peaved about not being able to produce WMV videos well.

FWIW, our first set of videos are about making recordings. And, yes, we do get a lot of requests about recording Vista. Later next week, we'll be addressing Editing and Producing.

Re: fawning Microsoft. Realistically, if we wanted to fawn Microsoft we wouldn't promote Flash. Right? And we certainly wouldn't point out -- as we did in the video -- that windows media encoding was broken in the version of Vista we were running. Its seems fairly even-handed from where I sit.

Now, your question, albeit a bit prickly put, is nonetheless a very good one. "How do I make better quality WMV videos?"

I made a video to help you out. Its made using the WMV profile that I show you how to make. Its a 4 minute video, and 3mb.

I just installed Vista and Office 2007 on a new computer today. So you video about recording Vista came just in time for me. Thank you for that! And thanks for that invaluable Sizer-Tipp.

Hi!

I watched your "Recording Vista" video, and tried to follow your steps on my new laptop that came with Vista. I got as far as clicking the "Personalization" link, but there was no "Visual Appearance" link on the screen that appeared, and I could not find any "Color scheme" settings like those in your video under any of the choices on that screen.

Joel,

I tried to follow the video also. My guess is that we have a later version of Vista. You can see whenn he starts his version is Beta.2

Anyhow, tried everything and still no go.
