Come out, come out, wherever you are...

Posted on Monday February 20, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I don't follow rules well - ask anyone at TechSmith.

So, it's no big surprise that I missed National Delurking Week this year. What's National Delurking Week you ask? That's where you come out from under your shell and tell me a little bit about yourself.

So, I'm not going to let missing a little date hold us back from participating! I want to know who you are so I can write and make videos about stuff you care about.

What do you have to do? We'll donate $1 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) for every comment from a unique visitor in today's post that tells me:

  • Which product(s) you use - SnagIt, Camtasia Studio and Morae
  • Where you call home

And, I'll throw in an extra $1 if you link to some work you've done with our products - or any comment that just makes me laugh.

I have up to $1,000 to donate to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children if we can get enough unique comments. If you're reading... please don't embarrass me by making me end up with a $3 donation.

Comments must be posted between now and Friday, February 24, 2006 at midnight EST. Comments must be on this blog post.

So, comment away, and thanks for reading the blog!

I have used the 30-day trial of Camtasia and loved it, but I haven't bought it yet.

I live near Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

And for the bonus dollar, here's an innovative use for Camtasia:

We use Camtasia for most of the BDNtv episodes we put on the Borland Developer Network. I even had our speakers use it during the Borland Developer Conference in San Francisco late last year. The recordings are at: http://bdn.borland.com/article/0,1410,33431,00.html

I also use SnagIt for any screen captures on the articles I post on BDN. It's by far the most productive screen capture software I've found.

I live in Santa Cruz, California.

I use both Camtasia Studio and SnagIt. Both tools I use to support my blog, but since Betsy asked for a smile, for sure Tango's screencast will do the trick. Tango is a 7 year old Moluccan cockatoo.

Snagit, Camtasia, and Morae are an essential part of my law enforcement toolbox. I use Snagit for a variety of reasons. I just recently used it to capture a website that contained illicit images.

As I law enforcement officer, I spend a great deal of time educating the public on Internet Safety. I utilize Camtasia to create recordings that I in turn share with parents. Its been very effective.

While I'm on a role, I also have to say that Morae is a fantastic program as well. I use it in an undercover capacity to record chat sessions. What makes it so remarkable is that essentially, I am able to "search videos for text". Using the Morae manager, I can actually do string searches for text that occurred during the chat session and be brought directly to the point where it occurred. Absolutely remarkable.

Betsy, thanks for supporting such a great cause. NCMEC is a fantastic organization dedicated to protecting our children. As I've said before, Techsmith has been an icon in the fight against online child exploitation. The support that you have shown to law enforcment has been outstanding, and we all greatly appreciate it.

I hail from the Canton, Ohio area (football hall of fame).

Our international team (Dr. Linda Fahlberg-Stojanovksa in Macedonia, Rev. Graeme MacNeil in Australia, and me) use Camtasia Studio and SnagIt nearly every day to create and share screencast (aka math tutorials or Whiteboard Movies) to help students and teachers around the world.

I call Issaquah, Washington (USA) home.

I'm in Portland, Oregon. Several of my colleagues use Camtasia to create library tutorials; I plan to use it for library instruction for distance learners.

I found my way here due to the link in The Distant Librarian's blog....

I use SnagIt ! to capture images on our 13 blogs.

I will hopefully also be a Camtasia user in the next 3-6 months.

We live in Kentucky and the blog linked to my name has some captures, but I'd be dead in the water without SnagIt ! as far as my golf blog goes.

It's at http://www.travellinggolfer.com

Hi Betsy,

I think this sounds like a great cause. It pains me to think such a thing really happens. I will share the day I lost my son. He was about 18 months old. It is a true tale...

Dad and Son were out raking the yard. I raked and he just sat and stood mostly. I had set my attention to raking a fine sized pile, and then remembered my son. About 60 seconds had past since our last "Hi Son!" exchange. I looked for him and he was gone! I turned left, right, called his name (not like he answers at this age)--fear chilled through all my bones.

I then ran around the house in record time, calling and getting everyone in the house on alert. I live in a small house and lapped the property in no time flat. As I came back to where I started, there I saw my son. He was by the rake I had set down before I ran around the house. One key to remember about kids is they are small. No he wasn't lost, he was simply behind me!!!

But for the brief minute, every thing else ran thru my mind. Kids are so precious.

Thanks for all your work. My work of course is made easier with SnagIt and Camtasia. In fact, I'm traveling in a few weeks to train some people on using it...what a great product...It should come standard with all computers!!!

Enjoy the day,

Tim

Does it count if employees comment? I think I can safely call myself a power-user of SnagIt - I could not do my job without it, that's for sure. I use it to take screenshots of ads, mock up new ads, proof old ads, make PDFs, etc. etc!

Quote floater
Betsy Weber :

Sure! We'll pony up if employees comment.

Do other TechSmithies read the blog? They might want to...otherwise they'll never know when I talk about them. ;-)

Tim Burcham :

Hi Everybody! I had a few minutes this morning and decided to drop a line on Betsy's Blog. I have been using Camtasia Studio from over three years now and it has revlolutionized how I develop online content. I adminmister our online Master's degree program in Agricultural Operations Management here at the University of Tennessee at Martin. I also teach four courses in this graduate program. I use Camtasia Studio to develop what I call "audio-enhanced" lectures that allow the student to see and hear what the Professor has to say and show. This methodology has been most helpful in our program development. We now have 15 courses (over 45 hours of graduate coursework) that feature "audio-enhanced" content developed primarily with Camtasia Studio that is delivered using a Blackboard CMS. I have prepared a brief AV demo that shows how we integrate PowerPoint, handwritten text, and MS Excel into a single Presentation. Just enter the following URL into your browser (make sure you have Windows Media Video version 10 or higher) to view the presentation: mms://streamer.utm.edu/tburcham/Burcham.wmv

Ok, Betsy...make that $1.00 donation! (-:

Another TechSmithie here to add to the fund!

As you know, Betsy, I work in tech support and obviously use SnagIt and Camtasia Studio constantly throughout my workday. I find it invaluable to be able to send a screenshot or video to a customer to help them learn how to use our products! I often get feedback from those customers about how helpful it was to see the exact dialog box I was referring to, or follow along with the process I demonstrate...

I also use SnagIt frequently at home, capturing online receipts rather than printing them all out and wasting paper!

Does anyone know what type of program I will need to create a handwritten text/print onto a standard size envelope? We need to mail out many of these per day and want to get away from physically writing out the thank you cards.

Thank You!
