Fun in the desert at CES

Posted on Tuesday January 3, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Troy Stein, the Camtasia Studio Product Manager, recently visited some Camtasia Studio users at the University of Minnesota to get feedback about how we can improve our software.

So, a few of us from TechSmith are heading out to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas tomorrow, and the same offer stands for you! (And while I like Minnesota, I must admit that this is an even better forum for discussions of any kind. We can meet by the buffet, the roulette tables, the Elvis impersonator...it's up to you.)

We'd love to hear how you're using SnagIt, Camtasia Studio or Morae, how you're using the products, and how we can improve them. Not only do we want to know what you like and don't - we need to know in order to update our software with the features that are important to you.

So, if you'd like to meet up at CES, give me a call on my cell phone, 517.410.0030, or e-mail!

Screencast of the Week - Continue Celebrating with Camtasia Studio

Posted on Friday January 6, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Don't you wish the holiday season could last longer? Well, it is – because we’re going to celebrate a little longer!

That's because Jack Zimmer from CADCourse Architectural Services just sent me his holiday 'card' made with Camtasia Studio! So, now, anytime I want to revive that holiday spirit, I can watch this holiday video.

Click the screenshot below to watch the screencast. You’ll be impressed by its creativity and attractiveness, I know...

Jack mentioned that it was his first attempt at this type of presentation.

Jack said he used Camtasia Studio as an experiment to present 3D CAD Architectural work. The card is specifically meant to represent phases of development of a 3D model. As work progressed, renderings were saved and then transitioned in Camtasia Studio.

Jack also used a feature in Camtasia Studio to add a hotspot with a hyperlink (see tutorial here) leading to their CADCourse Architectural Services page. That way, the card also acts as an inventive promotional tool.

At CADCourse, they use Camtasia Studio in a variety of ways, including recording WebEx and incorporating Camtasia Studio videos into their training products. They previously provided printed books, but they are now switching to 100% Camtasia Studio training materials to reduce cost and allow for material downloads.

I hope you enjoyed the Camtasia Studio screencast 'card' as much as I did!

Why did the TechSmithie Cross the Road?

Posted on Friday January 6, 2006 by Betsy Weber

To get to the Elvis impersonator on the other side!

We're having a great time out here at CES! It's been a long time since I've been to a huge show like this - the last time was for Comdex - and I nearly forgot how impressive they are.

It's so exciting to see all the new and upcoming technology. I'm seeing lots of mobile devices I want to try out with my Camtasia Studio videos. (Are any of you putting your Camtasia Studio videos on a PocketPC, Palm or other mobile devices? If so, I'd love to get your feedback.)

I also found a few small Tablet PCs I want to investigate more. I'm looking to do more screencasts when I'm on the go and while my Dell laptop is great, it's not conducive to carrying around a show floor...and these Tablet PCs look like they need a home.

I also saw some huge monitors! Do you think anyone would notice if I brought one of those back to the office?

Skype is at CES, giving out headsets and program CDs. So, I finally got around to getting Skype - I think I'm the last one! Skype me at: BetsyWeber

I have a big day on Friday. I'll be meeting up with the Microsoft Tablet PC MVPs to see and hear how they're using SnagIt and Camtasia Studio, and I'll also ask their advice on which Tablets to check out on the show floor. I'll also be heading out to a geek/blogger dinner with Robert Scoble, Chris Pirillo and Jake Ludington and other blogger celebrities. I'm looking forward to some great conversations, because it's always interesting to meet people in person after you read their blogs for so long.

Anything you want me to check out for you? E-mail me or post in the comments, and I'll try to do my best to be your roving reporter. And if you want any more pictures with impersonators, I think I saw Marilyn Monroe around here somewhere...

I've posted my pics from day one at show here. Enjoy!

Microsoft Tablet PC MVPs = Fun!

Posted on Saturday January 7, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I met with some Microsoft Tablet PC MVPs this morning, including Rob Bushway, Dennis Rice, Fritz Switzer, Charlie Russel, James Kendrick, Loren Heiny, and Trevor Claiborne. (Check out their blogs and sites for CES news and Tablet PC info!) And, congrats to TechSmith friend and all around great guy, Marc Orchant, on his recent Microsoft Tablet PC MVP award! Wish you were at CES this week!

I had a great time meeting people I've worked with over e-mail for a long time. They were a lot of fun and only teased me a little for taking notes during our talk the 'old fashioned way' - with pen and paper! Well, I walked right into that one...

Besides learning a lot, I also heard about some great Camtasia Studio videos made with a Tablet PC. With their help, I'm also going to be more mobile with my screencasts and the blog.

So, are you using SnagIt or Camtasia Studio with a Tablet PC? What do you like about it, or what don't you like? What would you like to see in future releases of our products? Also, please share some of your videos by adding links in the comments below, or just e-mail me.

Back to the CES show floor!

CES...I'll miss you

Posted on Tuesday January 10, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Well, it was a fun week at CES. This show was amazing, and it was such an honor to attend. There was so much technology, I could taste it!

One of the highlights of the week for me was the Tablet PC MVP, Geek/Blogger dinner.

I had a few minutes at the dinner to talk with Robert Scoble. (Go to his blog to read his observations on the show.) I had a brief chance to catch up with Jake Ludington, and Chris Pirillo, who both have great newsletters and blogs. Rob Bushway also has a recap of the dinner on his blog where he refers to SnagIt as a "snipping tool on steroids." While we don't condone drug use at TechSmith, we do love that phrase.

Another highlight of the show happened while I was wandering around the expo floor looking for the CAM Commerce using SnagIt in their booth! CAM Commerce makes inventory control systems, and they use SnagIt's batch conversion tool to compress thousands of photos to add to the inventory system that they show to potential clients. They also recommend SnagIt to their clients to compress and convert all of their thousands of pictures for their systems. It's always fun to run into users, especially when you least expect it!

I uploaded a few more pictures from CES. You can view them here.

New Year's Resolution...more Camtasia Studio Videos!

Posted on Tuesday January 10, 2006 by Betsy Weber

PowerPoint MVP Troy Chollar recently sent me a link to a new PowerPoint sample that he created. The movie of the presentation was created with Camtasia Studio. You can view the project here.

Troy told me that he made a new year's resolution for 2006 to actually develop and post all the samples and tutorials he has promised people. As a result, with his site well-stocked with Camtasia Studio videos, it will become a much better marketing tool.

Luckily, Troy was in town working with his client for the North America International Auto Show in Detroit, and I was able to meet up with him last night. He made their presentation that they gave during their press announcement. He used SnagIt to create the concepts for the presentation and for storyboarding. He gave me a sneak peek of the booth and presentation before we went out to dinner. And, if you've ever gone to the Detroit Auto Show, you know what a luxury it is to go on the show floor before it's open to the public, because you have the place all to yourself. See some pics from our visit here.

I hope this is one new year's resolution that won't be broken!

Where in the World is SnagIt, Camtasia Studio and Morae?

Posted on Wednesday January 11, 2006 by Betsy Weber

One of my favorite things to do when I stop by shipping (besides catching up with Jason Hatch and Greg Smith) is to check out our map.

We put push pins in all the places we get orders from, and it never ceases to amaze me where our products get shipped - to such far off, exotic places. I think I need to go visit our customers in Fiji to see how they're using our products and get their feedback...but somehow I just don't think that trip will be approved.

Here's a pic of Jason Hatch and Greg Smith from shipping. Chances are, if you've ever received a package from us, one of them shipped it to you!

I thought it would be fun to take that map and go online with it. If you visit: http://www.frappr.com/techsmith you can add your own push pin to our virtual map. You can also see other users in your area. Maybe even meet up with them!

Plus, when we travel for shows and events, we can check the map to see who's in the area so we can meet up with you.

So, I need your help - please, sign up on our Frappr map!

Time for the Camtasia Studio Screencast of the Week

Posted on Thursday January 12, 2006 by Betsy Weber

It's that time of the week again!

Jean-Claude Bradley is a chemistry professor from Drexel University. He's inspiring, amazing, and on the cutting edge of technology! He makes me want to go back to school.

I was impressed with his Camtasia Studio videos. Check them out - I think you'll find them interesting as well.

I like this screencast from the Villanova WebCT conference entitled, 'Augmenting WebCT courses using Podcasting, Screencasting, Blogs and Games'. Even though I missed the conference, I'm still able to hear and see the presentation since he recorded it with Camtasia Studio - just as if I were there. Hey - I don't even need to go back to school!

He records quite a few of his lectures with Camtasia Studio. If you have iTunes, go to the Apple Store and search on "Jean-Claude Bradley" or "Drexel". Or, you can visit his blog here.

If you're curious about screencasts, podcasts, RSS, iTunes, wikis or other new emerging technologies, check out his screencast. He'll answer many of your questions and show you new ways to use technology in the classroom.

Jean-Claude also has a nice showcase of Camtasia Studio videos at his screencast website which you can visit here. And, he has some nice class blogs complete with screencast lectures which you can view at: http://chem241.blogspot.com or http://chem243.blogspot.com

Enjoy!

And, there's a t-shirt for everyone that enters!

It's painless to enter, I promise! We just need help visualizing your old lab - send us your descriptive writing, photos or video by February 10, 2006.

Screencast of the Week - A Video for my Mother...

Posted on Wednesday January 18, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I found the perfect Camtasia Studio screencast of the week. It's about how to subscribe to blogs and podcasts from LearnOutLoud.com.

Not only does it tell how to subscribe, but it starts with the basics - it gives the definition of a blog and explains reasons why you'd want to subscribe to one. For instance, you're immediately notified when there’s updated content, all your blogs are kept in one place, and it's much easier to read on mobile devices.

Now, instead of trying to tell my mom over the phone how to subscribe to this blog, I can just forward her this screencast, and she'll never miss any of my posts.

After she sets up the RSS subscription, she can even monitor me to make sure I'm behaving. Some things never change...

Enjoy the screencast! Click the screenshot below to watch it.

Drum roll please... Camtasia Studio 3.1 has landed

Posted on Thursday January 19, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I'm excited to announce that Camtasia Studio 3.1 has been released!

New features include...

  • Flash 8 and FLV Output - With a click of a button, you can easily produce Flash files to share online. I like using the Flash output because I know most of you can view the screencasts we make on the blog.
  • Captioning - This feature will allow more people to view your content, including people who are hearing impaired or people without PC speakers. I like this feature because I can easily convert my PowerPoint speaker notes to captions.
  • H264 and QuickTime 7 Support - Who doesn't want smaller files that are easy to share with anyone - especially people who use Macs? Since Camtasia Studio 3.1 now utilizes the H264 Compression in QuickTime 7, you can drastically reduce your files sizes while maintaining the quality of the video. Works great if you have longer clips with real-world webcam video content. With Camtasia Studio 3.1, you can make better quality videos that can be delivered to anyone - especially people on Macs.
  • Quizzing - Curious about what your audience thinks of your presentation? Well, now you can find out. Based on your feedback, we added more customization options to our quizzing feature. You can now have fill-in-the-blank or multiple choice questions, and have the results sent by e-mail. It's the perfect way to get feedback on your presentation, and quiz your viewers to see what they have learned.
  • Free lunch! I was just checking to see if you were playing attention. OK, maybe not a free lunch, but we will give you 100 MB of space of free Web hosting for a month.
  • Rich media presentation options - Remember my old screencasts where I had the picture-in-picture video that sometimes would cover up my screen video? Now we have side-by-side video so your webcam video can be the focal point of your presentation. You can choose where to position your screen recording - have it side-by-side or layer it on top. It's your choice. We also have new, adjustable color schemes for your skins. Since we all know the most important part of your presentation is you, Camtasia Studio 3.1 makes it easy to add real-life video.

Click the screenshot below to see an example of the new side-by-side video feature.

Troy Stein, Camtasia Studio Product Manager, and Dave O'Rourke, Camtasia Studio Lead Developer, were kind enough to make a screencast for the blog. The screencast will make you laugh...it will make you cry...it will bring out all of your emotions. Ok, maybe that's a stretch, but it's fun and informative. Bring some popcorn and get comfortable as the video lasts for almost 32 minutes!

Click the screenshot below to start Troy and Dave's screencast.

Please note: the size of the following screencast is approximately 52MB and as such it may take a moment before it starts playing. It is recommended that you only attempt to view the screencast if you have a broadband internet connection.

And, if you have Camtasia Studio 3.0, it's a FREE upgrade for you! For more information about the new release, please visit here.

And, as always, we need your feedback. Tell us the good, the bad and the ugly. What did you like about this release? What would you like in the next release? Isn't that better than us guessing what you want?

Screencasts about Camtasia Studio 3.1 - Captioning

Posted on Thursday January 19, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I wanted to go more in depth about the new features in Camtasia Studio 3.1 for you.

So, I asked the Camtasia Studio developers to make screencasts of the features they worked on. Who better to tell you about the ins and outs of the new features than the person that actually made them?!

So let me introduce developer Marty Gardner! His screencast focuses on captioning - one of the new main features of 3.1. He gives great tips on making it easier to add captions to your video.

What's the next feature you'd like to see a screencast for?

A PowerPoint Reference for Everyone!

Posted on Thursday January 19, 2006 by Betsy Weber

OK, I'll be the first to admit it...my PowerPoint presentations stink.  But, I'm hoping they'll improve.

I'm on the road to recovery from bad PowerPoint presentations because there's a new book in town...Congrats to Microsoft PowerPoint MVP and all around great guy, Geetesh Bajaj, on the release of his new book, Cutting Edge PowerPoint for Dummies!

He has a whole chapter in his book about audio and video, including some tips for using Camtasia Studio with PowerPoint.  His chapter about his top ten favorite PowerPoint tips is worth the price of the book alone. Don't believe me? You can read some excerpts from his book here.

And, Geetesh told me that, 'Every single screenshot was created using SnagIt - I'm so spoiled with your amazing program that I can't even imagine a screenshot anymore without SnagIt!'

If you're interested in hearing about how Geetesh uses Camtasia Studio with PowerPoint, please read our case study about it here.

Camtacular Camtasia Studio Screencast!

Posted on Tuesday January 24, 2006 by Betsy Weber

I'm starting a new slang word...Camtacular! Feel free to use it whenever you see a 'spectacular Camtasia Studio' screencast or video.

We were having a little fun here at the office with the other day with Camtasia Studio 3.1's new side-by-side video display and ended up with camtacular results.

Watch our Digital Media Designer, Ann Dack, take on Google Earth with a globe. Anyone want to bet who wins?

Click the screenshot below to watch the 4 minute and 40 second video.

I think you'll find this video camtacular as well! Let me know if you've seen any other camtacular videos or screencasts...or have your own slang to describe them.

SnagIt 8

Posted on Friday January 27, 2006 by Betsy Weber

We've been busy at TechSmith this month preparing not one, but two software releases for you - it's a TechSmith Two-peat! SnagIt 8 has just been released and wait 'til you hear about all the new features and uses!

First off, you might notice things look a little different. We used icons for a more visual look for SnagIt - it should be easier for you to identify what you want to capture with the new icons. Rest assured, if you're a veteran SnagIt user, all your favorite and familiar capture options are still there (plus some great new ones), and the workflow is still the same as always. And, if you really don't like the new look, you can always switch to the Classic View.

OK, I've got to tell you about my new favorite feature. I know you'll like it too. You can now use SnagIt to capture Web pages with the links - and all of the links remain clickable! Interactive screenshots! You can save the capture in a format that support links such as a Web page with image (.mht), Adobe PDF, (.pdf) or Macromedia Flash (.swf). The links will be embedded in the capture and clickable, just as they were on the original Web page. Just send the capture by e-mail and simply indicate where to click.

So, you're asking...Why would you care about this feature? Because this new feature saves you the time and trouble of copying and pasting links, and it allows you to guide people to exactly the right spot. And, it is perfect for archiving a webpage. And, you don't need to know how to do any programming to do this. For instance, we've been eating our own dogfood at TechSmith and using SnagIt 8 internally for quite some time. So often I'll send a screen capture in an e-mail to my colleagues to show off someone's blog post about our products. Since I can capture the links, the recipients can click on the image's links - within the e-mail - and are taken to that Web page. So, I've gotten so used to this feature, that now whenever someone externally sends me a screenshot of a Web page, I find myself clicking on the links . . . only to find that it's just a static screenshot.

Here's an example of an interactive screenshot I made that I emailed to some co-workers to show them what was being said about SnagIt.

Coming in at a close second, my next favorite feature is our new hotspot feature.

Your screen captures can be more engaging and informative if you add interactive areas to them. With SnagIt's new hotspot feature, adding interactivity is easy. Capture an image, and then use SnagIt's hotspot feature to specify parts of the image that, when moused over, will display text or images, or when clicked upon, will open a Web page. Add helpful hints and explanatory illustrations, or even create a functioning prototype of a Web page. I also like that since the textual comments only appear when you hover over them, the entire image doesn't end up cluttered with text. I'll use this feature when I do mock-ups with the webstaff over a new blog design. I can show them how I want the new blog to look and function. And, adding comments will be handy so they'll know exactly what I'm suggesting. Create interactive maps, picture tutorials, a staff directory that shows their pictures when you hover your cursor over their names . . . this way, screenshots include all the additional information you want them to know, without getting in the way of the images.

The rest of the company is thankful for this new feature because I no longer have to bug random co-workers...SnagIt 8 can now save screenshots as PDFs. I don't have to hunt down someone with Adobe Acrobat to create PDFs for me. I can do it myself. I like it because PDF is a perfect format to share captured images and documents with others - since everyone is able to view this universally accepted format.

And last, who doesn't want to be smarter? SnagIt has smarter editing features now. With SnagIt's powerful editor, there's no need to go anywhere else to add the finishing touches to your captures. SnagIt 8's Editor has been enhanced to include vector editing. What's vector editing, you might ask? That means that the callouts, arrows, shapes and text that you place on your capture remain editable. What's also nice is that you can reselect any object you've previously placed on the capture to delete or edit it anytime. So, no hitting that undo key over and over to edit your annotations. Save time making your images look exactly the way you want them to, the first time.

Later, (by saving them as .snag - a new file format!) you can come back and modify those images for different audiences, or update them with new information, without going through the hassle of taking additional screen captures. I like to change my mind...often...so this feature will be useful for me!

I did a quick screencast with the Assistant SnagIt Product Manager, Jessica Boyle. Click the screenshot below to watch the screencast.

We'll be making some new screencasts for the blog to show off the features in more detail as well. Stay tuned! Or, if you'd like to submit a screencast showing off a new feature, I'd love to highlight you.

As always, we have a fully functional eval for you to test-drive SnagIt 8. I can't guarantee that new car smell, but you can kick the tires. I know you'll like it! Or if there's something else you want to see in a future release, we need to know that too. Here's a list of everything that is new.

We even have special upgrade prices for current users.

So, let's hear your feedback about SnagIt 8! What do you think? What do you like? What would you like changed or added for our next release?

Captioning 101 with Camtasia Studio

Posted on Tuesday January 31, 2006 by Betsy Weber

Confused about captioning, Camtasia Studio 3.1's new feature that allows you to add text to your videos? Want to learn more? Well, I have a treat for you.

Glenna Shaw, PowerPoint Magician and Microsoft MVP, recently wrote an article for us about all the ins and outs of captioning - complete with videos that have captioning in English, Spanish and German! You can read the captioning article here.

As you can see from her picture, she really is a PowerPoint Magician!

Her article offers lots great information about types of captioning, plus the difference between subtitles and captions. It also has links to some great resources.

You can read more about Glenna here.

Last time I saw Glenna, she was wearing a great t-shirt that was 'captioned', if you will. The PowerPoint guru’s shirt said, "*.PPT: Weapons of Mass Instruction".

Would you like to contribute an article for us to share with others? E-mail me if you'd like to discuss article ideas!
